i am getting an emerson and am having a tough time deciding. whic is better as a utility edc... Waved CQC-8 or Commander-BT or UTCOM CQC-11. please help

i prefer less belly on a utility blade, so of the three you mention, i would go with the 11.

Of all of those options, for a daily utility blade.....CQC-10! you can't beat a spear point for utility.

I love my commander though.

I love the 11, but keep in mind, it is a big knife! The 8 is pretty big too. For a big utility knife, as it has been said, the CQC-10 is not a bad choice.

If size is not an issue, then I would always recommend the CQC-11.

357---just looked over the 10. i love the fact that it is a spear point but how is the finger notch for opening. does it open easily, one handed--without using the wave. that finger notch looks like it would be difficult to open

i like the '12 or '13 best myself but of the 3 listed i'd get an '8, then the '11, then the commander.

+1 for the CQC-8 but get satin finish and serrations

It really is not a "finger notch" as much as it is an oval opener (similar to the ones that were used on Benchmade's).

I have had no issues with mine, it works well.

the HD7 isnt the best the best is a '12 imho because of the blade and grind.

the HD7 is the best tanto i suppose though.

anyone ever handled the S.O.C.F.K. i really like the look of it and its the right size. anyone ever seen or used one???

i have had several SOCFK's thru the yrs and very much prefer it to a '7, esp. back in the day when '7s werent waved.

i edc'd a SOCFK for a year or so and really like them, my tanto blade green G10 SOCFK is one of my fav EKI production knives.

The Karambit, as an everyday carry a great overall choice. It's good at opening mail, cutting cardboard, pruning plants, cutting up apples-peaches-pears-oranges, self protection, cutting rope-string-wire and some easy prying. Probably a good knife for EMT, Police, Office Worker, Gardener, Farmer or general retail. It's no good at chopping, sawing, screw driving or heavy prying. I wouldn't use it for Scuba. Fire Fighting or any occupation that requires prying or leverage.

I've had the CQC10 satin finish plain edge for about 6 months as an EDC, and I love it. Opens very easily, even without using the wave.

For ergonomics, i feel the cqc 8 is the best choice, and aesthetically speaking, it has much cleaner lines then the commander or the UT-COM

I have the 8, 11 and Commander....

I have had the Commander the longest of the three.

My vote would go to the 8 as the best all-rounder. The 11 is LARGE and the Commander is hard to sharpen due to the chisel grind/recurve combination.

The 8 offers an excellent SD/utility compromise - it was designed as a fighting knife but that in no way hinders its utility.

I would also look seriously at the 13 - very versatile blade.

Finally, the PSARK is a dark horse contender. The hawkbill is tremendously useful as a utility blade.

The CQC-8 would be a great all round knife since the curve would give you a good cutting angle, the only draw back I can see is the fact that if you were trying to cut something with only the tip of the blade say paper you would have to angle the knife downwards more.

The CQC-11’s spear point is a much more practical design since it would be better at stabbing and praying because you have more material around the tip as not to chip or twist the end of your blade, the handle is larger so if you have a slightly larger hand I’d go for it.

The Commander I’d say would be more of a self/ combative knife but I have a buddy who uses it everyday for almost everything and even throws the thing into drywall and wood floors just to show that he trusts his knife that much to do that.. I wouldn’t personally do that since it’s not really intended to be thrown around.

The SARK and PSARK would be a great all round utility knife as well cause of the hawk bill shape, the up would be easier time cutting boxes cause the curve of the blade goes downwards when holding the handle straight out.

The Combat Karambit and Super Karambit are good cutting blades and self defense blades but the draw back it’s not that good at stabbing straight out but if you hook the tip into something and curl forward it draws a deeper cut that just a stab. The finger hole is also great if you don’t want to drop the blade by accident and also acts as a means of intimidation by spinning the blade around and a way to give extra distance in an attack.

I would also recommend the CQC-7 and Super 7 as a good all purpose knife cause of the tanto tip which is good all round, I liked the way the Super 7 felt in my hand cause it has heft and larger surface area to grip.

Sharpening can be a hassle on the commander but just follow the steps on the Emerson site and use a diamond sharpener or a ceramic stone (I use a ceramic stone for all my knives) and it should return the edge back to a very close sharpness. Depending on how much you use the knife and what you use it for sending it back to be sharpened by the guys at Emerson might be a better way to get things to the chisel finish edge

You should look at blade tip styles for what purpose you are using the knife for, all the blade designs have ups and downs which would be way to long for me to list but my all round favorite knife that I would recommend would be a tie between the Commander and CQC- 11 because both are good all round knives to carry but look at things yourself and ask if they are really suited to what you are using them for.
