I have a close friend who is a f/t cop & p/t reservist getting ready to deploy again & I have him sold on a ESEE blade. Which is the most preferred ESEE blade in a combat enviroment using the molle lock system on a fully loaded rig. I was thinking RC4S? also, does anyone know the discount being offered to the men in uniform?

Thoughts on the blade from some vets would be great, on his previous tours he caried a puma bowie & was pleased, but now wants to step it up, being that the puma was a larger blade maybe even a rc5/6 is in order? Thoughts:thumbup:

For a military discount, I would recommend contacting Jeff and Mike directly at eseeknives.com. They'll definitely take care of your friend.

I've never served so I'm not really one to make a great recommendation. Just so you know, there has been a new batch of ESEE knives recently. The new models are pretty much the same but with a sharpened swedge on top. I think this makes stabbing and piercing cuts more effective and it's easier to sharpen that swedge yourself if you wish. Something to keep in mind.

Hope that helps.

Thanks to your friend for his service.

^^^Good point, and I'll have to look into that with the sharpened swedge. My brother is also getting ready for a second tour, so I'll prob get him something too. Wish, I was going too. I tried to re-enlist a few years back & was denied since I got some ink on my neck & I'm not too fond of getting them lasered off to make it through meps.

I'd vote for an ESEE4 due to size, personal preference wouild be for a plain edge -- but if he's a person who likes combo blades, there's nothing wrong with that.
Also, if you have any around the house, let him look at them and see which one he likes best -- then tell him it's his. Instant karma - and the look on his face will be one you can rag him about for years. Plus, that makes the gift a bit more personal for both of you.

I was thinking the same thing, or them using their id's to get the discount & me paying for the blades. My only condition was for them to come home safely & for pics of the blade in country.

I think any of the mid sized ones would be good.
ESEE-3, ESEE-4 or HEST

Also, keep in mind that the ESEE-5 was designed to be a SERE knife.

The 3 or 4, or the HEST would all fit the bill just fine. Hopefully he'll be using it to open letters, MRE's, and crates.... and nothing more!

Thank him for his service for us all!

I have to stop using the rc designation & start calling them by the proper name. We're leaning heavily towarsd the ESEE4. I may just purchase 3 in one shot after I figure out the logistics with some communication from ESEE direct. I saw the ESEE5 was a SERE knife, and that's why the 4 is getting the nod. Thanks for the input.

I think the rc-4 would be the perfect size for a combat knife. The rc-3 seems a little small and the rc-5 or 6 would probablly be a little bulky. If he likes a bigger blade then the 5 might be a better option.

I would have loved to have a ESEE-4 on my tours, I think it's the perfect size and it should be able to do anything you need it to. The 5 & 6are just too big, he doesn't need that thick or long of a blade, but I am sure I am just preaching to the choir. Tell em good luck!

ETA: And one more vote for Plain edge, and a small DMT sharpener to keep in his vest!

If he's planning on breaching doors by jamming the lock I would say esee 5 but otherwise it's a little heavy on top of mags, water, m16/m4 and beretta. So I would say esee 4 plain edge.

Well...never been in a military combative environment...nor have I ever been in a desert country. However I'd definitely feel very comfortable taking the RC4S I've been working with lately into the field pretty much anywhere. I don't think with it being 3/16 steel that the ESEE6 would be too big or too heavy...but that's from my perspective here, and not having handled it yet. Once you add in all the other necessary gear, canteens, weapons, and ammo the 4 may well be the best choice. It's definitely a great field knife and handles very well.

Looks like the ESEE-4 in OD is the winner. Thanks everyone on the input. I'm going to email ESEE direct to get the appropriate discounts. Pics from the stan in a year or so, unless I can get them emailed first.

Good choice on size....you sure he's gonna wanna carry around bright orange handle?

Def not. I need to learn my blade models better. It will be the RC4 with the micantra handles. Don't need any taliban spotting a neon orange handle across the desert.

Hell, if this economy doesn't improve I may get some tats lasered off & re-up myself.
