I'd like to get my bro an ESEE for Christmas... At first I was thinking a Becker bk2 for pricing purposes. Then I decided I want to give the gift of ESEE. So which is it? HEST? But I'm thinking something bigger. Esee 4? The 4 seems to be alot of peoples favorite choice. Please let me know your recommendations. If the 4... please specify why. I know the 5 will chop better, but he has a machete for that. I know the hest has more 'tools' built into it. But the 4 will baton larger wood.

Tell me what you think and why. Thanks!

I think the 4 would be a great choice.
It isn't much of a chopper but you can baton smaller diameter pieces to length as well as split them.
The HEST is awesome but my 4 and Izzy get the most time out.
Either way your bro will LOVE the gift of ESEE!!!!!

What is it going to be used for? I would say the 4 since it seems to be the best all around knife.

I think he only owns a couple folders a machete and maybe a cheaper fixed blade. A multi-purpose camping/survival woods knife is what I'm going for. 4 or 5? I own the 5 and have never seen the 4 in person.

(Off topic rant: It drives me crazy that companies like Jeep, S&W, Winchester, Hummer etc put there names on super crappy knives! I saw a 40 dollar Jeep survival knife with handle storage on sale at Big 5 for 12.99!, I wouldn't send someone I cared about into the woods with that.) Thanks for listening.

How often is he in the woods?

Around town, I don't carry my RC4. But the HEST is in my pocket, work bag, or car all the time. I would only take the 4 into the "wild". They are both great knives, but I see them as having a different purpose.
Money aside, if I would only have one, the RC4. It's the perfect size, especially if he uses a machete.
The BK2 and RC5 is for cutting your way out of a plane, IMOH. I own both, cause I like knives. But, in all practicality, I'd take a chopper/machete and something in the size of the RC4 on a trip to the woods.

depends on what he likes to do, or what he's going to use it for.

some people like the HEST and EDC it, some people don't seem so thrilled by it... but the ESEE 4 seems to be a fairly "standard" mid sized knife that should please many people.

of course, if you had a family member that you didn't like very much you could get them a $12 Mora and still be gifiting a decent knife.

but i think it's probably hard to go wrong with the 4.

His EDC is his current folder, not a fixed for legal reasons :( I'm not paying to get him an esee folder. I wish I could. Sounds like I'll go with the 4. Thanks guys.

the izula and izula 2 are both great "pocket sized" knives for everyday chores and use.
the 4 is a near perfect trail/hike/camping knife.

I ordered my brother the 4 (black, plain edge). He has been drooling over my Esee's lately and this is will be a great present that he won't expect! Thanks for the feedback.

The 6 will chop and baton better than the 4. With the 4 you will have a little more control when doing finer work. They are both the same thickness. If the knife is going to be used as a camp knife, i suggest the 6. However, if he will never baton or chop with it, the IZULA or RC3 would be a better choice.

Well that really depends on what he would use it for. If he's going to be edc'ing and doing light to medium duty then I suggest either the Izula or the HEST, or maybe the 3 if he is going to be using it more. If he will be using it to baton and chop then I suggest the 4 as it is just a monster. But for just an all around camp knife then 6 is probably the way to go. But all in all 4 is the best of all world IMO. Small enough to carry and strong enough to put up with some serious cutting chores.
