I don't think I've used a machete since college and the military some 40 years ago, but I find myself think about picking up one of Andy's for the yard, weekend wanderings in the woods/camping with the grandsons/a bit of horseback trailriding. But first, I'd like to read the advantages (and disadvantages) of the different machete blade lengths from those of you with more experience than I have. Your thoughts/opinions?

I have a 12" machete and do a lot of the same things you mentioned for which I think this size is perfect for. I will be getting the 16" to do more serious brush, weed, vine or chopping needs. IMO the 16" will offer me more cutting length and power in those situations. I was leary of the 16" when I was first looking at the fiddlebacks. I remember a couple comments about don't be afraid of the 16", it will pack a lot of performance. Now I know what they meant. But again, I really do like the 12" for the activities you spoke of.

They are well built machetes for sure but I wish the handle had more girth to it.

The 12" would be great for the activities you described. I have a 12", 16" and an 18" and the 12" gets the most use followed by the 18".
