what cutters or files are used to file on a blade like when doing file patterns on the spine. when the blade is in the hardened state and not annealed?

I do know for a fact that dremel cut off wheels will cut hardened blades, but besides that, I dunno of any file that will get it done. Filework is definately a pre cooked job. Sandpaper wrapped around a file and A LOT of elbow grease will work also.

If it's hardened you can use diamond files to do filework on the spine. They're only $3.99 for a set at Harbor Freight.

Depending on the type of steel and size of the blade you can also clamp the edge between some aluminium plates or place it in some wet koa wool and take a torch to the spine of the blade and an heat it up to about 900f or more and let it cool slowly. This will soften up the spine while keeping the edge hard and let you cut the spine with a file.

If you would check out my site, you can see my filework on my spine. I filework my blade in the hardened state. You will need to use Diamond files for this kind of work. Hope this was of help to you. Have a blessed day. And please sign my guest book. ----------------
