I'm looking to start modding a couple inexpensive knives to get my chops up bu doing some file work on the spine of folders and along the back of fixed blades. Looking for information on a set of files. As in which ones and sources.

Lil' help please ?

Home depot has the Nicholson brand. I'm sure there's better out there but they are $6-$10 and work fine.

To work on hardened steel you'll need abrasives or diamond grit files. Harbor freight has a cheap set of diamond needle files that work well enough.

If you want to work on harden steel get quality Diamond files.

If you want to make a few knives you will be doing bevel filing before HT.

Years ago I made my first few with files, I walked around yard sales swap meets and bought up a load and the then put the better ones aside and annealed the others to file & shape knives out of.

Get the USA Nicolson, You want what I believe they call a second cut file for steel work and get a card to clean the files with.

I used files until I sold enough knives to buy a 2 x 72" machine. Its been years so here is a good link for you.

Are there still usa made Nicholson? The ones I find online and in stores are made in Mexico.

About the only way that I know to get "new" USA Nicholson files is thru NOS....or New Old Stock. Search online for Nicholson USA made NOS. Aldo at New Jersey Steel has some awesome 1.3% carbon files, flat and mill. The Nicholson's being sold in borg stores here in the states are worthless junk. Made in Mexico and/or Brazil now. And they are just garbage....at least the ones in my local borg. Files with bends in them, misaligned cutting rows, shallow teeth, and BAD heat treatment and/or steel.

Pferd and Simonds are my top two choices if no NOS Nicholson USA. Grobet makes excellent files, but I have yet to try them.

I still have 14" double cut and mill bastard files in stock. You will find them on the web site if you are interested.
