hey guys. i just read a post by Tom Krein that talked about the finish that Dan Koster and him are putting on their new Dingo knives. He was saying that they bead blast the blade, then hand rub the blade to the same finish, but only slicker (hope that made sense. here is the thread for referance. post 5).

so my question is, would a mirror polished blade be the best for resisting corosion out of all the finishes "traditional" finishes (i am refering to non-coated blades. basicaly the bead blast, satin, mirror finishes)?

i read that post and was kind curious.

Mirror polished would be the best and bead blasted is the worst. Satin would fall somewhere between the two.

correct.

The finish we put on the Dingos is an "easy-to-restore" satin finish.

Mirror polish is the most corrosion resistant finish...but hard to achieve and maintain by most folks. As soon as you use it...you get scratches.

A bead-blasted finish is very rough and even on stainless steels it will rust if not cared for.

So, in our minds...the best finish is one that a user can easily restore. (requires only a scotchbrite pad....no buffers...no belt sanders, etc)

3 different finishes....3 different purposes.

for corrosion resistence a mirror finish is best, for instance i mirrored a piece of O1 and used it to slice an apple-no discoloration/patina at all.

the same O1 with the precision flat ground finish began to discolor after 5 minutes in my water cooling bucket.

but i agree with dan. the satin finish isn't the most stain resistent, but its the easiest to restore if it does stain.
