I am about to order a Kydex Sheath for my Cris Reeves Mountaineer II.I am going to have it to also house a DMT flat sharpener on the back.I would like to add a Fire Steel to one side but do not know alot about the different types.I would like one 4" long or so.No plastic hande to add bulk.I have seen some that have a block of magnesium for tinder. Is this necassary?Do any of you know if the coating on the Chris Reeves knife will affect the striking ability of the Fire Steel?I plan on using these together. What would be my best choice?Where to purshase it?What is the best tender to use along with this type of ignition system?Any other ideas you might add for the ultimate sheath system?

If you are going to the trouble of haveing a fire steel attached to your sheath, why not have one with a handle? Any smaller and you might just as well carry in your pocket or elsewhere.
Smallest I know of is at www.survival.com I believe it is- that is Ron Hood site, it has a shop online with small fire steels. Pick up 5 for discount price, always good to have more than one-

Thank's martin j but that one is way too small for what I have in mind.I should have said at least 4".I can always take the handle off.I would like one 1/2" in diameter at least.

Hey Booger...

Drop Bagerra a note..
Buy a large Swedish Firesteel from him or get the smaller "Cadet" I think its called..

If you don't want the handle,,just knock it off...

This is your best bet for a firesteel in the size you want...

The Steels that Hoods woods sells are Great for kits,,but for practicality,,the large is what you want...

Unless you plan on keeping it in the handle of the knife,,then the HW version is absolutely perfect....

Go with Bagheera:

phenskens@hotmail.com

He is honest, polite, fast, and cheap. His firesteels are excellent, and the money goes to a good cause. (He sells firesteels to raise money to take scouts on outings.) And he includes a chunk of fatwood, firestarting papers, a scraper, and a lanyard.

He has truly gone beyond the call of duty in his business relations with me. My best internet dealings have been with him.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

As to firesteels generally: the larger the diameter, the better. The larger diameter ones throw off a lot more sparks than the smaller diameter ones; they last longer; and they are easier to hold on to when you use them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

While you're ordering from him, be sure to pick up some Trasers, too.

I've gotten several Swedish Firesteels from Bagheera and can confirm that he's a great guy to do business with. I would only add that, though the Firesteels work great, I'm less enthusiastic about the striker (or scraper, or whatever you want to call it). I made new strikers from pieces of hacksaw blade, which produce a spectacular shower of sparks (though it chews up the steel a bit). Anyway, there have been other threads on firestarters in general and on strikers in particular, so you might want to do a search.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the kind words of recommendation, they are appreciated very much.

At the moment we still have a bunch of Large Military Firesteels and a few smaller (1/4" diameter) Scout steels left and Glowrings are soon being ordered.

The scraper works fine with me and our Scouts, one has to take care to find the correct angle to scrape and then it works perfectly

The Swedish Firestarters are the best product I've seen. You can't go wrong with them.

Bagheera I sent you an e-mail.
ClassifiedOO nice one,may try that one to.
Alco141 I don't plan to use the cutting edge of the blade.I would use the back side.
Thank's for all the help.

Bagheera, I sent you an email...I meant Jeff Randall, not Ron Hood; Randall's distributor for his Swedish and Scout fire steels has been jerking him around, and he no longer has any and doesn't see getting any in the near future.

What type of steels are you carrying Bagheera? Are they similar to the one's Jeff was carrying? If you've got some pictures, please email them to me, thanks

Bagheera's da man! The Swedish milspec FireSteels are absolutely top notch and Piet's an incredible man to do business with. (BTW, The FireSteels are the same as the one's Jeff was offering.)

I have several knives with Normark's OST concealex sheaths and FireSteel attachments. The FireSteel's handle does not in any way interfere with the knife when carried in this fashion, plus it's very secure in mounting. The handle makes it very easy to manipulate with cold, wet hands or when wearing gloves.

Mike

Thanks Mike,

Normark is 'The Man' for excellent Kydex/Concealex Sheaths with Firesteel holder, the firesteel is held very secure.

DP, let me tell you a small secret, our Scouting group started Jeff Randall on the Swedish Firesteels, I even had some nice Airport security collisions in the Netherlands (Schiphol) and Dullus Airport(WA) when I had a giftwrapped very heavy box with 50 Firesteels that I wanted to send to him from the USA as it was much cheaper.

DP, Jeff is an great guy he helped our Scouting group by buying these Firesteels and also helped us out with some other stuff that ghe send us.

DP, I send you an picture of them.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Hey, Piet,

Do you have any idea where I can get more of those pink firestarter papers?

Thanks.

Mike,

your lucky, I managed to scrounge together aa bunch of boxes with 100 pink waxed fire strips each in France, those poor guys won't have anything left to start their petrol heaters anymore in wintertime ;)

Just drop me an email, best scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Piet - Don't get me wrong, my difficulties with the Firesteel striker may very well be due to my own ineptitude; I have no doubt that your scouts are more capable fire-starters than I am. However, my homemade strikers are unquestionably functional and easy to use. They work for me, and might work well for somebody else, too.

Nathan,

No problem, I didn't mean to criticize you either, I know the sawblade scrapers work very good but they are also harder, as you said so, on the firesteel.

Don't underestimate your capabilities, I could easilly make so video registrations about firesteel use and sent it to "America's funny home video's" practice and lots of it is the only way to get tinder burning fast and always.
It's no problem getting cotton/coton+vaseline tinder balls burning but when it's rainy/windy and you need to use tinder you get from nature it's a whole different thing.
Our Maya-wood key-chain attachement will always provide tinder and even lighting that takes practice lighting.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera
