If a checkered pattern and a blast finish is desired for the same scale of micarta or G10, which should be done first? And why?

It's kinda like which one came first, the chicken or the egg.

Depends on the look you want, how sharp the checkering is, what kinda blasting media you are using, and what the "feel" you're after.

I checker first, with the mill or checkering files and then do the blasting with ceramic bead and light air pressure.

Take some scrap material and try it several ways. Sometimes the best final product comes after a few mistakes. No, us knifemakers don't make mistakes, we modify existing patterns.

Hope I helped.

Thank you Mr. Carson. Actually, my plans were to send some more micarta and G 10 scaled blades to be worked on. I had a few checkered with a 14 lpi flat diamond pattern. I am more concerned about the whitish chaulky appearance after the checkering and was curious to know if blasting afterwards would help eliminate this. I' ve tried some WD 40 and it worked only for a few short days. Some have suggested applying/ dabbing a coat of polyurethane after the checkering. What are your thoughts?
