Which First - Knives or Guns ?

I take it that a lot of the members here are interested in collecting and using guns as well as knives. I was first into firearms (early 20's) and collected them a good 15 years before I ever discovered how wonderful and fascinating knives (and steel, etc.) can be. Curious... for those of you who love them both, which came first... knives or guns? Also, if you had to give up one, which would you give up? I hate to say it, but I think I'd give up my knives before giving up my guns. I can "cut" with a rifle, but I can't shoot with a knife.

I was interested in guns before I was interested in knives, but my interest in knives far exceeds my interest in guns.

As a civilian, I have never needed a gun. A knife is a tool I use almost daily. A gun is next to worthless, though very fun. It's a toy I use to shoot at paper targets. However, I still value guns in case I ever do need them for SD. The need for a knife (as a tool) just comes up far more often.

If I were a LEO or soldier, I would rank the gun much higher than the knife as the gun is a better SD weapon, and my life would depend on it (moreso than a knife).

Precision projectile delivery systems (guns) came first, then the edged material seperation systems (knives).

I like technology and guns just had more interesting mechanical characteristics till relatively recently. Still gotta heck of a lot to learn concerning both, though.

Hmmm, that is a good question! I played with toy guns when I was a little girl!! I wanted to be a Police Officer. Then came the love of knives.

I started shooting and collection guns a long time ago and just recently started getting into "better" knifes. I've always had knives to use for camping, hunting, daily chores, but they were basic Bucks which are fine, but there are a lot more out there as y'll know.

Guns came first, until I moved into town and can't shoot in my backyard every day, (they get kinda upset about that in town) then I got into knives and only keep "user" guns now.

I was given a gun before I ever had a knife. It was kept with the family collection but it was still mine.

I've got a pretty good selection of guns but have found knives to be more 'affordable' lately. The knife collection has grown hugely as I figure out just where my interests lie.

I actually liked knives first. Then I got into firearms and I love them. Shortly after I found that it pays to be a bit of a snob ie. get the SIG not the cheapy Jennings etc... In the last year though I have bought 1 gun and like 6 knives all Spyderco. With one exeption my newe Himilayan Imports 18" Salyan khukri.

I liked guns first and then knives, I was into high quality high end guns when I was like 15(kimber rifles, seiko, Sig sauer etc). Now I am into pistols more(colts, kimbers and glocks). Guns come first by a slight amound because I hunt so I need to use them to harvest what I will use my knife on. My .50 cal Barrett and my SA M1-A are next to come before anymore knives:D.

I was into knives a little before guns, although I discovered the wonders of both around the same time. If I had to give one of them up it would probably have to be guns. Although they are really fun to shoot they do not serve an important purpose in my every day life. I (luckly) don't have to shoot people every. Knives, on the other hand, get used every day. There is always a letter, package, etc. that needs to be opened that my knives are perfectly suited to. I'd be interesting trying to open a letter with a gun...

I was raised around guns but never really had the money to buy many. Had a shotgun and mostly shot my dads guns so knives were what I collected. I think that once I get out of college and can afford guns I will probably go on a spree where I buy a bunch but eventually that will fade and I will turn back to knives.

If i had to choose only one though I think I would choose guns....I think that the times you actually NEED a gun are times when your life is on the line, but times when you need a knife you may be able to get by without one.

Neat, interesting thread, GoodGuy

I can't separate my interest in guns and knives, remembering when I was 4-5 years old I wanted to hunt and fish. I imagined that I had what ever gun and or knife I needed.

When I could buy...a knife came first because of the affordablility factor. When I could afford a gun it was a shotgun for bird hunting then a .22 rifle for small game, then big game rifle. Buck knives, Ruger guns.

It was always the basic and affordable models...up until the divorce:rolleyes:...then I could buy, without accountability, within my budget:yawn:. First it was the guns, more of an accumulation than a collection.

After retirement:D I renewed my interest in knives(Buck)...this forum, thank you, has broaden my interest and knowledge and enjoyment of the knives. Preston

I carried a knife daily in grade school. The size of the knife increased as my hand size increased. BB guns came at about the same time, but those stayed at home. Guns arrived in my life when I got around 10 and then started hunting at age 14 (family rule). Gun ownership flourished in my 20's as I was filling vacancies in my use requirements. Collecting came later.

At this point in my life, my interest floats back and forth between firearms and knives. I like knives and enjoy handling and looking at them. I enjoy looking at the craftsmanship. I carry a knife every single day unless I'm going to the court house of something. Neither guns nor knives will leave my life until I depart this life.

Growing up in New Mexico and West Texas, I came to appreciate that both certainly have their uses, but nothing says "Please leave me alone" like my Glock 23. Knives certainly get more everyday use, but the ability to defend you and yours is a priority that a knife can't overcome, unless you are close enough to smell their bad breath. I was taught that you shouldn't allow that to happen. So, Guns it is.

When I was 17 I got into the cheap sword and fantasy dagger thing. Had absolutely no interest in quality "user" knives or guns other than target practicing with my uncles twice a year when I visited them. By the time I was 18 I had bought my first balisong (butterfly knife). Cheap, crappy thing that will fall apart if I even pick it up. I ended up wondering my way here around 19, by 19.5 I had my first benchmade balisong. Shortly afterwards I had a half dozen high quality folders and a few more good balisongs... and the cheap swords and daggars were junked. There isn't much I don't love about knives nowadays.
About 1.5 years ago I stumbled onto thefiringline and have been a member since. To sum it all up, I got into knives because of this forum, and guns because of that forum... but my love for solid matter seperators is much greater than firearms.
[Edit] I'm 22 now btw.

As a child I was not allowed to have a firearm, but was allowed a pocket knife. Slip joints was all that was available at the time.
