Recommendation? Which fixed blade would you choose to take a long on rigorous day hikes/climbs?

I'm a fairly serious day hiker/climber. During the summer I get into some fairly long and rigorous hikes/climbs (most outings are a mix.) In the past year or so I've faced a few situations where it would have been comforting to have a larger, fixed blade knife with me (in addition to my Victorinox Trekker pocketknife and canister of bear spray.)

It would be difficult for me to (legally) take a firearm along so I'm not interested in that route. I'm also not that overly concerned about some additional weight to my kit -- up to one pound or so including sheath would be fine.

For the serious dayhikers/climbers/mountaineers out there, which larger fixed blade would you choose? Thank you.

Rock climber here. My falkniven F1 has gone with me basically everywhere on my pack. It's so effective I don't need anything larger. If I do, I have a two hawks comp thrower I bring sometimes for 12oz of entertainment.

Otherwise, my new guardian tactical recon 40 will be replacing my ultratech as standard pocket carry for a while.

That's all the blade that's ever gone with me on serious hikes or approaches.

If your comfortable with up to a pound you got a TON of options. Your gona get so many different answers. Starting with your budget and maybe at least length of blade you think you might need will help at least narrow it down a bit...

Pardon me if I'm misunderstanding your actual first priority concern here , which seems to be a need for self defense / fighting blade ?

If that's the case , then the focus should be on what the potential threat really is and how to deal with that .

The climbing , hiking would be relevant for size and weight limitations maybe , but otherwise how ?

Isn't this more a Practical Tactical type issue than a hiking / climbing concern ?

Thank you. That Fallkniven F1 is a pretty sweet blade. So is your 2Hawks Throwing Knife. I like to throw knives too. I have some older, inexpensive Cold Steel throwers that I play with.

Have a look at the SOG Pillar, very good 5" blade and comes with a decent sheath too.

Same here. But when I go climbing, I am already carrying a ton of crap so a serrated folder for rope and a multitool (either SAK or small plier based multitool) is all I take.

I own a Falkniven F1 and S1... if the F1 seems too small for you, go with the S1. Not that much heavier and it is more substantial.

I carry a white river backpacker pro when I hike, its very slim and light but substantial and pokey when needed.

Try something from bark river also, I feel like they beat out Falkniven in the value department, especially steel selection.

If allowed, I would say in a pinch an OTF with serrations is hard to foul up operation for when the adrenaline kicks in and you really need it. I carry a little UTX70 when I go fish on a boat.

I guess it depends on what you use it for!

To me, those two sentences seem to contradict themselves. While I don't know the terrain or obstacles or intensity of your hikes and climbs, I do know from experience that every ounce counts depending upon what else is in your loadout.

I think we need some more details about what you are doing - and perhaps where, before recommending something.

You say "climbing", but that is rather generic. Are you walking up a hill, or scaling wall-faces with ropes and 'biners? Big difference.

Are you looking for a general purpose blade, or is self-defense your first priority as you seemed to have alluded to? Are they truly day hikes, or is there a chance you might need to overnight sometime (either by chance or by choice)?

Yeah this guy has completely ignored all relevant questions to actually try to help. Doesnt feel like a troll thread but I seriously don't see the point. I'm out.

I like the ESEE 3 in S35VN. Good size that isnt too ridiculous in terms of weight and there are multiple mounting options if you get a Tek-Lok or a ulti-clip. Not sure it would be my choice for fending off a bear but then again, if fending off bears is a real concern then at that point you have to start thinking about guns. I am not sure where you are that carrying a firearm on a hiking trip is not legal but if you are running into scenarios fairly regularly where your life very well could be in danger, the opinions of polyester suited politicians might come secondary to your life and limb. Just food for thought.

Since the OP has decided not to reply to the requests for relevant information by those attempting to answer...and has ridiculed one member's attempt to give a serious answer, this thread will be closed until such time as he is willing to supply that data.

(Thanks to those who have taken the time to provide some excellent recommendations.)
