There seem to be a lot of options, and I figure someone here has an opinion and some experience. All of the models are similarly priced (or at least not more than 1 or 2 knife sales' difference), so I'd like to get the best/most versatile one for what we do. I'd appreciate all the feedback that can be gotten.

I've seen a thread or two about this over the years, but the search function is erroring out on me these days. Not sure what gives there.

Thanks in advance.

More power is ALWAYS good to have. You won't know you need it until you do thane you'll smile.............

Go for the 1/3 hp not the 1/6

Everything I read about foredom's said to buy the largest motor they offer which I believe is the 1/3HP that synthesist mentioned. There was a recent post, maybe a month ago, going over the options. Foredom's site is confusing!

Search any site with google. Type into the google box:

Just about any SR motor will work. The foot petal is really nice to have to control the speed of your bit. The H.30 hand piece is what I use and like it a lot, it has a chuck key like a drill press to change bits. Riogrande has them in stock for a reasonable price and they offer some with different kits like for jewelry or detail wood working.

The 1/3 horsepower units are the TX series motors. Something to consider when deciding between a SR 1/6 HP motor and a TX 1/3 HP motor is the SR motors reverse, while the TX does not, and the SR motor can spin up to 18,000 RPM, and the TX can spin up to 15,000 RPM.

Depending on how you use it, and if you're a left handed user or not, the reverse can be nice. For the majority of uses the SR motors are great. Foredom rates their motors at continuous output, so their motors actually perform the same as other manufacturers motors that are rated at more HP.
