im looking for a good forge and sence i left my custom forge in hawaii when i left im looking for a new one. im going to need it for welding and forging from round stock. but i have seen so many places and people selling forges i dont know which one to pick. i dont want hot spots, i was looking at the nc knifemaker forge but i have heard thay have hot spots. my last forge was in the round so it was more of a even temp. but it was way to big, ID was 12" length 20" so it used a lot of propane. it also needs to be able to be taken outside to be used so portability is a must. thanks for all the forseen help.

one more thing, which one its better. venturi or forced air. my last forge was venturi. im looking at 500.00 or less

Kind of a standard answer, but consider looking at Darren Ellis' website. I have for a bunch of stuff.

Darris Ellis!!! You can get a really nice forge from him on your budget that just needs to be lined and you're ready to go. I'd go for the forced air burner setup if you plan to do much welding. It's much easier to get up to temp and allows for more tuning of the atmosphere.

I have been looking around and this burner has very good reviews. its the 1" burner from Hybridburners.com it seames to be one of the best out there. im thinking ID of forge to be around 6-8" so i can have good room for billet welding and forging down large stock. but im not shure about the length over 12" for shure (any sajestions). is this burner overkill for this size of forge. also would darris ellis be willing to use the Hybridburners 1" burner on his forge if i bought on from him. are his burners very good. I was thinking about making my own forge but i dont have a welder.

JT, This is Kathryn posting from Darren's computer....he's out of town for a little while. I'm sure he would be willing to sell you the forge body without a burner if you would like. The Venturi burner that comes on our forge is pretty equivalent to the 3/4" hybrid burner on that other site. We have friends that have both, that one and ours, and they tell us that they will be getting more of ours when they need another burner since they work just as well, and cost half as much. I do know that that forge will go to 2400+ degrees with the Venturi burner we supply.

p.s. the burner inlet tube is 1.5"

Chile forge is a great little forge I hear. Extremely nice and helpful people too. I inquired about the price of one of their models online, and the owner and his wife sometimes contact me at home and chat with me about knives and things. I've also heard great things about Darren Ellis and his wife (cool that she stepped in here and helped ya).

It's people like those who I want to give my business to.

Blown burner, vertical style for me.

After building/using a half dozen different gas forge designs, I found the vertical Don Fogg style the best for forge welding damascus. No hot spots and the flux just collects in the bottom. Is also very good for heat treating and general blade forging.

I was also thinking about the vertical forced air forge. but some beople say its very limited in its uses. but it seams to be very evenly heated. thanks, any good plans for a vertical forge. im think im going to build one. because then i can make it how i want it.

JT, I think you'll get a more even complete burn with the vertical. I do with mine and its a venturi style burner. jmo. bruce/birdogforge
