Which Garmin Street Pilot is a good buy? I need one that have voice alerts/directions, and comes with a map of the USA. $400 is my spending limit. Thanks.

I've owned three Garmins: Street Pilot III (sold to my bro), Street Pilot 2610 (using it in my car now), and a GPSMAP 60csx (handheld in my backpack). The first two offer voice alerts and work great in the car; the latter only beeps on a turn.

Quick question though: do you need waypoint capabilities, allowing you to set your own routes? For me, any GPS I use must have this capability. I have preferences for the routes I want to take, and the waypoints allow me to make sure the GPS guides me the way I want it. This feature can generally divide your choices and help make your decision. It's usually only available on the higher end (> $400) models though.

Another consideration is making sure you get a GPS with the Sirf III chipset. The GPSMAP 60csx has this, and it's light years faster acquiring satellites than the older 12 channel receivers. Plus, it can hold a fix through trees and city "canyons" better. I can even get a signal through the roof of my house (up to 25' accuracy!).

If you have a few models in mind, the following site offers some of the best reviews I've seen. I've been reading their reviews for years:

I bought a Garmin Streetpilot 2620 a couple years ago and have been very pleased with it and with Garmin customer service.

But . . . $400 won't quite cover it . . .
