I don't have a lot of money right now, but I know a good grinder is good to have. I have been looking at the grizzly for a while, but somone recently posted a grinder that is being sold on eBay now. I was wondering what yall thaught about it. Whould it do as well as the grizzly?

This is the eBay one. It comes with all the pieces exept for motor for 99 bucks

and this is the grizzly. It is about 355 $

Id always get a manufactured grinder rather than a homemade one unless you made it yourself.

What I did was get a 2x42 craftsman for 99$, and just make knives until your knife profit fund gets big enough to buy what you want!

If you already have a motor, I'd look into the Coote belt grinder. The're a little bit more than the Grizzly, but I've heard they're good.

I have a grizzly, and can never get the belt to track true to the drive wheel.

Centaur,
Maybe you'll find this page of some use in regards to your tracking problems. (That server has been a little flaky lately; if the link doesn't work try here)

Harleyd2900,
There are a lot of useable machines out there (including home or shop made ones like you posted). Try to find the most quality within your budget.

All three of the commercial machines mentioned so far are capable of making fine knives.
The ebay machine might be also; give the seller/maker a shout about it.

See some of the grinder options available to you here.

Regards,
Greg

if you can put some cash aside for a while the KMG is awesome if not the grizzly is one nice machine for the cash!
i think its better to hold off though. in the meantime work on other basics of knifemaking, brush up some skills and learn as much as you can then go for the grinder and get practicing

For the money, versitility, and product support you can't do better than KMG. Rob Frink is "the man". :D

I have never used the KMG, but considering the others, the Burr King 960 with the IIams Platten and variable speed is an absolute favorite.

Thanks for your coments.

The KMGs look so nice but damn 925$ for the 10" wheel set up. I think i am goint to have to go with the grizzly.

Good plan. Go with the Grizz, and when you get cash from selling your knives, buy a KMG setup. There's something to be said about an evolution to knifemaking.

I used a Grizzley grinder for 5 years before getting my KMG. The grizzly is a good machine to start with. It gives you an extra spindle for buffing or whatever, you can get one that runs perfectly, tweek it to make it so or they'll swap it if your not happy. I have two Grizzlys, one tracks perfectly the second was just a bit wobbly so I ran about 1/8" of electrical tape around the center of the drive wheel and it straightened it right out. Get what you can...when you get the money, get a KMG.
