Which Griptilian?

I'm looking to buy a Mini-Griptilian. Should I get the D2 Tool Steel version from Cabela's or the Standard version (I believe they are 440C)? OR - Do I get an '06 model? - Apparently they are going to be made from 154CM in '06. One last question - do they identify the material type on the blade?

My quick answer is-it depends. What's your budget? I have mini-grips in the 440c and D2 steels. 440c is great steel, easy to sharpen and takes a nice edge, this will be your best buy, although you will have to keep it honed more often than the other steels you have inquired about. The Cabela D2 costs a little more, so far it has held the edge and I have yet to sharpen it, worth the upgrade? I'll know better when sharpening time comes around. I do have a Benchmade Ares with 154CM and it too takes a nice edge and is relatively easy to sharpen. Benchmade does identify blade steel on all their blades, at least in my experience. Hope this does not confuse your purchasing decisions.
I guess I would think about what your intended uses will be. It will be easier to steer you in the right direction knowing that.

Thanks for the info. I'm just looking for a general use carry knife. As far as I can tell, the Mini-Grips I mentioned are all about $75.

I have the original in 440C and wish I had knew about the Cabelas D2 before I bought mine... If i were you I would go get the Cabelas just because of the D2 which is an awsome steel. I just got a BM activator in D2 and I have cut everything in site and never had to touch up the edge and it still shaves nicely.

gpk still has some 440c ones on sale for 42$ i thunk-great price

and dont forget there is one made from s30 v from ritter i think at around $100-

I would go with the Cabela's D2 version. You're not going to get hurt either way.

definately the cabela's d2. great price for d2 steel.
i plan on getting a d2 fullsizegrip before long

There are also the very popular semi-custom Rittergrips available in S30V, and at least for now, there is a very limited quantity available in M2 high speed steel.

I have the fullsize and mini Rittergrips in S30V, AND have the fullsize M2 on order. I EDC the mini-Rittergrip in S30V. Fantastic knives!

Lots of information at http://www.equipped.org/rsk_mk1.htm. These knives are only sold at http://www.aeromedix.com , and a portion of the price goes to support the not-for-profit equipped.org.

After the advice this morning, I decided to run over to Cabela's in Dundee, MI (I leave near there). I picked up a Benchmade 556 Mini-Grip in D2 for $69. What a great little knife! Thanks!

nice, thats cheaper than the website price too.

I've been looking at 556 PE's in either 440c or 156, there is a Cabelas about an hour and a half from me, maybe I'll have to check out the Ritter Grip D2.

I believe the Ritter grip comes in a limited availability of M2, and then there are the S30V Ritters. I happen to have a yellow Ritter Mini-grip w/ S30V.

I've got the full-sized Ritter, the mini Ritter and the mini D2 from Cabela's (black handle, plain edge).

I like both the minis just fine and think they're both very good for the money. That said, I carry the D2 more often. I like the clip point a little better for day-to-day tasks, and the D2 takes a beautiful edge from my Sharpmaker. Love that little knife.

Duh, I dunno why I keep forgetting about the Cabela's Mini-grip!! Can I find in the Cabela's online catalog?

The D2 Griptilian is a Cabela's exclusive, and was not designed by Doug Ritter. The Doug Ritter Griptilians are currently available in S30V and a very limited run in M2.
