Hello hawk nuts. Um, thats Tomahawk nuts, not the sex organs of a predatory bir... ahh... whatever!

Anyways, which hawk for a first hawk for a hawk virgin? They have that Squaw hawk/pierced Squaw hawk, and one called the Shawnee hawk. The Shawnee is larger than the Squaw Hawk.

Thanks for the help!

What will be your main application? The Shawnee is a good size for camp chores and throwing, although it is heavier than, for example, a Two Hawks Competition model ( www.2hawks.net ). It might also be a bit heavy to carry on lightweight backpacking trips. However, it's probably the best H & B hawk to start with.

I had a Squaw and it is a cool little hawk. However, I don't think it's large enough for a lot of serious chopping. I sold it to a guy in my martial arts academy who is well under 5 ft. tall and weighs 70 lbs. It fits him a lot better than the Shawnee would. The Squaw would probably be a decent choice for backpacking because of its lighter weight.

I guess I should have given those details!

It will mostly be for admiration and learning about hawks. A little bit of throwing, to take on hiking trips, the occasional overnight camping trip, and for martial arts work.

Thanks!

Unless you really need the extra light weight of the Squaw for backpacking or extended hiking, go with the Shawnee. It is more of a regular size hawk. If it proves too heavy for your needs, it would be easy to sell or trade---or give to a friend for a birthday or holiday. Of course, at H & B's reasonable prices the best thing might be to order one of each. It would probably be several dollars cheaper than ordering separately (savings on shipping), if the Shawnee turned out to be too heavy.

I'm not trying to run you into the poorhouse here, but if you like to throw knives, take a look at H & B's leather handled thrower. Next to my old Blackjack thrower, it is one of my favorites.

For all that, I like the spike hawk (think its called the Medieval spiked head). Still fares as a thrower, duty, etc, but that spike is just EVIL when it comes to MA. If that doesn't appeal to you, I would go with the one that appeals to you the best, When it comes down to it, they all work the same. Shawnee fits males better...usually. HB is a good choice. I love them. NW

Thanks guys, I'll go with the Shawnee and see from there! I'll order that and 2 handles.

DWK: I won a thrower from Bobby branton on the knife throwing forum a while ago! A #12- BIG bowie style. I've thrown it in one session, when I spent 2 weeks throwing last summer (first time throwing knvies.) It sure did the job! It threw easy, and its large size hit the target HARD.

The H&B will be my learnign hawk, until I can save up for an ATC hawk. Thanks again guys, I'm pretty excited.
