Hey all, i'm in the market for a fishing knife, I fly fish, deep sea, pond, you name it. I am going to use the knife to cut bait, line, seaweed off of the bait or line, fish, gutting, cleaning, and also use it some days as an EDC if I want to. I am looking mostly a the new benchmades, the 111H20, and the 551H20(Griptillian). I know there are other brands that make knifes that are very corrosion resistant such as the H1 line from spyderco, but i am not a fan of FRN the least bit. So my question is, Out of the 111 or 551 (or the pacific salt if anyone has really good feedback on it over the benchmades) which one would fulfill my needs better? And also im looking at the plain edges. I understand that they are both different steels, any feedback on either one comparing edge retention, corrosion resistance, and how easy they are to sharpen? Thanks everyone.(thank you kw for the pics)

Well those two knives also use a material that is similar to FRN so I'm not sure how that will work out for you.

The Spyderco Pacific Salt and the BM H20 Grip are some of my favorite water knives. I have both and have a hard time choosing one over the other. Just pick one you can't go wrong.

Thanks for the advice. I didnt know that the handles were similar to FRN, thanks. I was already leaning towards the grip and I'm pretty sure thats what I am going to get.

I think I will pick up the 111H2O at some point. The Benchmade Rift is my favorite knife and this is their salt water version of that knife. I think this alloy steel is new for Benchmade so I will be curious how it holds up to salt water. It has been proven that Spyderco's H1 is corrosion proof and will not rust. However, I have not been very impressed with it's edge holding ability.

I am also curious what Benchmade uses for all the hardware like screws, clip, springs, etc to prevent rust on these knives. I guess if I don't hear anything about them soon I will just have to order one since summer isn't too far off and I plan on doing quite a bit of fishing and scalloping. I think it can be had for around $70 which isn't too bad.

A sharp tip isn't always a good thing when using a knife on a moving boat. I don't think the blunt sheepsfoot type blade will bother me. I can always do a little grinding a get more of a point if it bothers me. Here is the normal Rift:

I never knew that the 111 was a version of the rift, i love the rift. Thats on my 2010 list to get. The 551 can get purchased for 72 with a code. The liners are I think 420j which is pretty corrosion resistant as well if I heard right. Im just hoping the axis lock mechanism is made out of that as well. Ill be soon to find out. Ill let you know.

Noryl GTX is just another proprietary form of Fiber Reinforced Nylon. What aspects of FRN do you dislike?

It just feels really cheaply made in my hand, just a thing that bugs me, but i've heard that 551s feel a bit cheap in ways also. Kind of going against my own rule but it really felt like a good purchase.
