a buddy and i have decided to switch from tents to hammocks, in order to lighten the gear a little. he went with one from the Military Surplus store, but hasn't gotten a chance to try it out, yet. i'm still undecided and (honestly) a little overwhelmed by all the makes/models.

anybody have experience in this area? size and weight is a concern, but not that big a deal as it'll already be a huge reduction over a tent/air matress combo. warmth is important, but can be made up for with bedding. biggest concern (other than price) would be keeping the rain ALL THE WAY out along with the insects and ease of set up.

thanks :)

I have a Warbonnet Blackbird. Very, very comfortable. In fact one of the best nights sleep I've had camping period. It has a little shelf which is unique to Warbonnet and a foot box for a more comfortable lay.

You'll need an underquilt though. Some people try using mats or pads instead but it just isn't the same.

Check out Hammock Forums for some very helpful, very knowledgeable folks on all things hammocks - it's where I started!

In terms of quilts (under and top) I have two from Jacks'r'better and couldn't be happier. I've cut my weight and bulk down considerably.

I also have one of Warbonnet's tarps which is light and does the job perfectly. It's also quite huge so you can use it for more than just sleeping under.

The "Got To Have" hammock appears, at the moment, to be the Warbonnet Blackbird.
I'm looking at the Hennessy Ultra-Lite Explorer side zip though. More bang for your buck with the Hennessy IMO.
Hennessy is also still running their holiday special whereby you get a free Scout hammock if you spend $129.

I have a simple and inexpensive Eagle's Nest Outfitters (ENO) DoubleNest. I later bought an underquilt, ridgline and other add-ons to make it into a compact, lightweight and comfortable replacement for a tent.

As others have said, get on over to Hammock Forums and word up!

Clark North American. Truly a 4 season hammock. Made in the USA. Built unbeievably well.

They also make other models.

The clarks have pockets underneath fro adding insulation, they will also rig an underquilt if you need such. I wintered over in my Tropical model with just a sleeping pad under me for insulation. But I sleep very warm. Only really uncomfortable night I had was when the zipper on the sleeping bag gave up the ghost at 2am. That was no fun.

Clarks look more expensive. However you get everything and not just the hammock. durability and build quality are off the charts.

I've got a Clark NX-250 in Camo with an oversized tarp. I figured if I was gonna get a Clark, I might as well go all out. I've since added whoopie slings & some micro climbing biners. I love it!
