The Yojimbo or the Paramilitary? I currently own a Yojimbo but am afriad to use it other then to open mail since I have heard several accounts of the blade being very fragile. I was looking at the Paramilitary and was thinking this could be an alternative but my question is on blade strenght. Could the informed individuals help me out and shed some light on this?

I don't think you need to worry about your blade being too fragile to open more than just mail. As long as you use your head and don't place any undue lateral stress on the tip, you can cut pretty much anything you want (so long as it's made of a material that's harder than the blade). I use a Military heavily all of the time and it has a freakishly thin tip. No problems whatsoever. Sal and co. wouldn't sell a knife that wasn't tough enough to cut reasonable things without breaking. The ones that were not designed for everyday cutting are clearly marked as such right out of the box (like the Civilian).

If you use your Yojimbo to pry and chop hard wood, then you might possibly break the tip. Otherwise, relax and don't worry about it. Your knife is a tool and is meant to be used. Cutting stuff is what it was born to do. You'll be suprised at how good it is at the job.

If you read my replies to some of the Q's & Post out there, You will see that I am a major believer in the Spyderco Paramilitary knives. I have been using a full serrated version for over a year day in day out. I bought the knife used because the pre-owner read somewhere that the blades chip & crack. I have been very rough with this knife @ work with no ill effects. I work in a Plastics Plant and have cut PolyPro to High Density plastics of all Thicknesses. Try to cut through a 1/8 sheet of poly-pro sometime. Tough stuff!!! I cut on wood tables Steel benches and on the concrete floors at times. I always have to cut down large sheets of cardboard or slice through a Gaylord Box (5 panel layered boxes to hold 1500lbs of material) Point is, I don't think you can go wrong with the Paramilitary S30V or even a Manix for the $$$$ you will spend. Hope that helped! ~baba~

I have the Ronin, and it is a fierce cutter. I cut heavy cardboard with no troubles, and it has an incredibly thin needle point. If the Yojimbo breaks from just cutting, there is something wrong with it.

I have owned both and although I am not hard enough on my knives to break them, the Para seems more stout than the Yojimbo. The Yojimbo has such a fine point that I could see breaking it at some point. That is what I like about the Yojimbo though, it has a nice thin pointy blade that cuts like an Exacto blade.

If you are really worried and need a big beefy knife, the Manix is about as strong as they come and still cut like a knife should. You can get bigger stronger folders than the Manix but I don't know of a production knife in it's size and weight range than will be as stong and cut as well as the Manix.
