Which Hawk Is Best For Throwing?

So I don't know out of my selection which is best for throwing. All be using it for the odd bush job but I'm not cutting down a forest or anything so mainly for throwing purposes. The ones I was looking at was the Cold Steel Frontier Hawk or Pipe Hawk for a more basic, older, original look. Or the SOG Fasthawk or Voodoo Hawk for obviously a more newer, tactical look. Don't know really what is more designed for throwing, wanted to know what you guys think?

I would go with the pipe hawk, just because I think it's the best looking of the cold steel line, and is basically a frontier with a hammer poll for extra utility. The extra weight on the back may help it track straight as well. Not a big fan of the SOG hawks, but they are all sharp edges on handles, if you throw it properly it will stick. Pick the one you like best.
(They will probably all need some thinning of the edge to stick more reliably)

Just another thought, I remember hearing the norse hawk from cold steel is the best thrower because the upswept point will still stick on an over rotation.

I've thrown my SOG Fasthawk quite a bit. I was very suprised at how well it has held up, I though the handle would break. It is easy to throw, and stay on target, but it's short. It's so short that it's rotation speed makes it hard to stick. With a longer hawk you can count it's rotations, while in flight, and pace off accordingly.
Got my Fasthawk during a Christmas sale in 2011, for $20. I've been throwing that thing for over a year, with very minor edge damage.

Not saying it's the better choice, just sharing my experience.

norse and frontier hawks from Cold Steel. cheap, good weight and balance properties for throwing. did I say cheap? that's kindofa big deal when learning to throw. you'll mess up some stuff until you get good at it. go with cheap.

they do throw really well, though.

Thank you all for your opinions on you likes and dislikes. I wanted to add that I heard the American Tomahawk Company VTAC is a good hawk for throwing? And also wanted to know the difference between short handled hawks and long. What would be the big difference? Amount if rotations? Speed? And what is more suited for throwing?

I know that wasn't one of the choices that was given but couldn't agree more. Thrown them all..........VTAC blows them away for throwing (for everything else too!)

Yeah the VTAC is awesome! I used to have one but foolishly sold it and now I am looking to buy another one, probably a used one this time. It's a shame they hardly ever pop up here on the forums.

To the OP, generally a longer hawk with the weight distributed towards the head will be better for throwing. That's where the VTAC excels, since about 95% of the weight of the VTAC is all in the head.

I'm viciously searching for another one to get!

Metal Made Fox........you can still find them online with the new sheaths for $99. You can also call Andy at Fehrman and he will even do a little extra work on it;). Andy also makes new custom kydex sheaths for them as we'll for about 35 bucks.

Killer Goose.......most of my posts here revolve around the VTAC. I own several and have taken them to places few hawks have been. Check out some of those posts if your interested and I believe I cover throwing with the VTAC a little. Btw.....I have nothing to gain by being so biased about the VTAC, I've just have quite a bit of experience with tomahawks and the VTAC seems to have very few weaknesses.

Agree with Metal Made Fox and Snakebreaker...Have played with the VTAC's for years and had great results .....

Another fan of VTAC here. I'm not interested in dealing with a lot of wooden haft damage just because I'm a poor thrower.

Norse hawks are nice. Whatever you buy get extra handles, they will break.

Gil Hibben pro thrower II is not really a hawk, but they sure are fun to throw.

I don't know though if I would want to spend that much money for the VTAC. I have a place were I can get one but it's around $110. I mean I'm putting a good amount of money into it I don't know if I'd want to abuse and use it in the bush and throw it. That's where I think the Cold Steel hawks come into play because there no where close to the price as the VTAC and at least If I get out of throwing in a couple of months, I didn't spend all this money for nothing. Also yes I would get the CS Norse hawk so that's on my list.

I've thrown the Trailhawks for over a decade, and can't complain about their performance. Plus, for the price, you can pick up a few of them.

Well thank you all for your inputs. I decided to get the Cold Steel Pipe Hawk because the fact I find it the most appealing to their line up of Hawks. I already ordered it so hopefully all receive it within' the next week or two!

Good choice, I have several cold steel hawks but the pipe hawk looks great to me, I may have convinced the girl friend to get me one for my birthday. :) It's functional and good looking, lots of mod potential. The trail hawk is nice too but it just doesn't look like a real period hawk at all.
