good day to all
i hope u can help me here...
i gonna purchase a folding knife soon and im still stuck as to buy a CRKT classic KISS, samsons KISS or their Lightfoot Urban Shark. Also would u pple recommend these knives to be purchased? Which of these is more durable and more effective(versatile)? do they both work just as well? also should a tanto or spear point blade be chosen, whats the difference? Reason why im chosing these two knives is becoz of the price range, can i get any better lock knives that fall under this price range(50 and below)?

What about small KFF or one of the M16 models? (all CRKT)

If I were you, I would also check Spyderco's supply.

Here's just a few more to think about...

If you look around, you can find a Spyderco LWT. Calypso Jr. for under $50.00 This is an outstanding edc knife.

Fudo speaks the truth. The Calypso Ltwt. kills the CRKTs with quality steel alone--never mind the opening hole, which is awesome, the ambidexterity, the grip, and the flat grind.

Just to put another option in the pot for you. Benchmade now has several knives right in that same price range that will take quite a lot of abuse.

I would probably stay away from th KISS knives if you are going to be doing any slicing. The tanto KISS is great for opening boxes, though. I would like to find a Sampson's KISS, but haven't really felt the need, yet. Some of the other CRKT knives are pretty neat, and the Lightfoot Urban Shark looks to be quite handy. I would recommend the LUS. If you are open to other manufacturers, look into Spyderco, for sure. The Native is right around the same size as the ones you've mentioned.

Check Spyderco

The Delica 98 can be found for about $45 and is considered to be the best value in a folding knife by lots of people. Its design and quality are outstanding and the price is great.

i would go to www.newgraham.com and get a BM 800 for $65, i recently got one from www.outdooramericastore.com from jed for $60 a BM 800S, a heckuva lot of knife for the $$ imho - i would also personally prefer the CRKT kasper over any other folding CRKT, get a kasper (<$40) and a companion by CRKT (<$30) and get a good sheath ($28) and ya are fixed up in both a folder and fixed blade, they have very similar handle profiles, both are designed by bob kasper, the later model kasper lock probs have been solved i think, my new kasper locks up fine - i just dont think ya can beat that combo - any of the above knives imho will do the job, and at a good price too -i have never been real crazy about the shark-have you handled one? imho the kasper is 10X the knife (shark)-and the BM knives have about the same length blade, albeit narrower, and weigh much less, and better steel, but the CRKT is good enough imho too, and a little cheaper - if $$ was an issue would rather have a kasper folder/and companion vs just the BM i think- just my .02 worth , too much coffe tonite lol

Welcome to the forums, jln26. Sorry so few forumites paid attention to your questions in their hurry to suggest their favorite knives.

I own a number of CRKT knives, and like most of them quite a lot. I own the small Peck knife, much like the KISS knives. I find them difficult to open easily with one hand. They do make excellent money clips, and maybe the larger KISS knives are easier to manipulate than the Peck.

The larger Lightfoot Urban Shark (LUS) is one of my favorite CRKT knives. It fills the hand quite nicely, feels comfortable in the hand, and is a pretty good utility knife. It was designed to be useful in self defense, should that ever prove necessary. The blade shape is very good for stabbing, okay for slashing. It has the sense to not be black, but instead is an attractive nice grey. The action is very smooth, my blade came extremely sharp. The blade steel, AUS6 is not the most highly regarded steel around, mostly because it doesn't hold an edge so well as other more costly steels. It does take a very good edge, and is quite corrosion resistant. The blade is fairly well polished, which helps it's corrosion resistance.

CRKT had 2 other good knives which have been discontinued, the Apache and the Mirage. Smoky Mountain Mountain works has the medium sized Mirage with an aluminum handle and a combination straight edge/serrated edge blade of AUS8 on closeout sale for $15. The blade is about 3" in length. I'm not sure if they have any of the Apaches in stock, except possibly the Apache 3. This is a very good, cute little knife, but probably doesn't have as much utility as the LUS or the medium Mirage. It does have ATS34 steel, definitely a cut above AUS6 or 8. It too has an aluminum handle. If they have the Apache 2, I would recommend it over all teh other CRKT knives mentioned thus far. Here is SMKW's URL: http://eknifeworks.com/webapp/eCommerce/index.html

I am also a Spdyerco fan, and the advice you received about them is good advice. However, I would recommend the Native FRN handle over the Calypso Jr ltwt, because of its greater sturdiness. The Calypso Jr is an excellent knife tho.

If price is no issue for you, you can look around the web sites of Knife Center or 1SKS, which have about the largest variety of knives along with a fair amount of information about the knives. 1sks is better for info, and probably prices to boot. All you have to do to go there is go to the top of the page and click on Store. Feel free to ask more questions here if you wish some help on choosing a knife.

I hope this helps you. Again welcome, and excuse our exhuberance, please.

Edit: Forgot to say that SMKW has the large LUS for $27. That is a pretty good price, tho you might find it a bit cheaper elsewhere. I checked Bayou LaFourche, which often has the best prices around, and gives very good service. Their price for the large LUS is $25.49. Their URL is: http://64.49.193.154/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=227&1=236&2=-1

thanks for all the choices and replies everybody i really appreciate it. is there a reason fo rblades to be black is it better that way? or is it just to 'look good'? coz personally i cant help but fall in love with knives having black blades...
thanks again to all

If you like black blades, go for it! The BM AFCK that SIFU1A mentioned above should make you very happy. The black coating simply gives the blade additional corrosion protection, which is probably only necessary if you opt for the M2 tool steel. Also, it won't reflect light if your given to undertaking dangerous "tactical" missions. And they do look cool - but not so cool after hard use, as they do scratch quite easily (but still, supposedly, retain their rust-preventive properties).

LOL Bugs! The murkier we can make the water, the better!

I like the Lightfoot better than any of the KISS knives.

Bugs did the typing, I agree.

See also the little Calypso Jr in Micarta for a nice piece (discontinued for some reason, they pop up used occasionally, some new stock out there still also).

k people thanks for the comments now how does the gerber international ar 3.00, the sog mini auto clips and the l.u.s compare?
