I am really leaning toward the Ranger RD7 but I do like the looks of the Scrapyard Yard Guard, what is the difference in steels, anyone know? (5160, SR-77)

I'd say 5160 (spring steel) will take and hold a better edge. SR-77, unless I'm wrong is S-7 (shock resistant) steel, and so will take a bigger beating. Far more makers use 5160 for knives--it is one of the most commonly used steels for large bowies. S-7 is more often used for axes and tomahawks. I would say that this is for good reason; of course, everything depends on your use and your priorities.

By themselves I would say 5160 is a better steel for a fixed blade, and s-7 would be better for axes and tomahawks. That doesn't take into account the heat treating, For instance, the heat treat that companies like Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat use make their s-7(they call their special heat treated s-7 "sr-77") superior to most 5160.
They are both great though, and I would be perfectly satisfied with a knife in either steel. Justin @ Ranger and Dan @ Scrap Yard both make great blades!
