Which is Best Size for Forum Pictures?

Hey guys, since I'm posting alot of pictures these days, I'm wondering how they show up on your screens. Mainly, are they showing up too big for your taste? Seems worth asking in general what an optimal size is for forum pictures. I would think it is about 900 pixels. I used to post pics in 800 pixels, but then they seemed too small to really see good detail.

I have a big 24" screen now, with high resolution. Recently I have posted some pics 1200 pixels across. Are these too big? On my screen, they look good, and I assume more and more people are slowly upgrading to bigger monitors with higher resolution, so I thought at this point, 1200 might be OK for alot of folks.

If they seem too big, I can try to dial pics down to 900 or so. But they sure look better in big-time, like 1200!

For comparison, the first picture below is 1200 pixels across (including the brown border). The one below it is 800 pixels across. Which size do you prefer to view pics in?

The first one fits my screen very nicely, and I'm only on a 15.4" laptop.

Keep it at 1200!

My laptop resolution is maxed out at 1280x800, so your first pic is the largest I can see without having to scroll side to side. I still have to scroll up and down, but since I have to do that to read the posts it'a no big deal.

I'd love to have a have a bigger screen, but they just don't sit comfortably on my lap. :p

Keep 'em 1200 wide!

I have a 17" screen and the first pic is too big....

Barb -- You could try increasing the screen resolution, if you're interested...
-Right click on the desktop
-Choose Properties
-Click the Settings tab
-Slide the Screen resolution slider to the right
-Click the OK button
This should refresh your screen and popup a dialog box that will ask you if you want to keep the settings. Click OK if it looks good and you are all set. :)

This is one of those few cases where bigger is better! :D

I'm all for the larger photos, unless they're blurry or don't have knives in 'em.

Yeah, knowing what size to post is a dilemma.

I've got huge ones (and my monitors are big too*) and even the laptop does 1440x900 so personally, the bigger the better.

However, when I'm posting I try not to go wider than 1024 most of the time, and often less. I've done a bit of web design and programming in the past and sort of got used to designed for the lowest (reasonable) common denominator.

Something else I have done is post a reasonable sized picture and hyperlink it to a huge one. That takes more effort though. More useful when selling things perhaps.

I'm interested in what the outcome is...

* 24" 1920x1200 next to 21" 1600x1200, both wide-gamut LCD.

I do. . .

I have two 19" CRT monitors each set to 1024x768

I sit at least 3 feet from the monitors, and I like being able to read.

1024x768 seems to be where I set mine. That is half of the resolution that I shoot with and allows for some cropping. In Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 I set the crop window to that size and I can scale the image to crop what I want.

I host my pics on Photobucket, and have the default set to resize them to 800x600. Looks like this...

I say the bigger, the better.
Great photos!!

Tip of the day:
Browser zoom - in Firefox, hold down ctrl while you scroll the wheel of your mouse.
Scroll forward to zoom in and towards you to zoom out.
The browser zoom affects all content of the web-page (not just text like it used to).

(if you don't have a mousewheel or scrollpad, hold down ctrl and + or -)

Disclaimer, I haven't tried this in IE, Opera or any other browsers.

True, but I find that method blurs the text somewhat. For sharper zooming or zoom out on a Mac, use the Apple button with the + and - keys. For sharper zoom in or out on any computer, I have found changing the screen resolution works better. But in a pinch, to move in and out, the Firefox trick is nice.

Indeed, screen resolution is the way to go.
I always run the highest possible resolution available, and use the scroll zoom if just browsing and a picture comes along that doesn't fit (too small/too big).
On the monitor I use ATM, the 1200 is just right.

Another neat trick to get the most out of picture threads, hit F11 to go full screen (I think that goes for both IE and FF?)

The bigger the better. I can see both on my 13" laptop. I would say that anywhere between 800-1200 pixels is ideal.

On a side note, I host all my pictures from Picasa so my largest is 800 pixels.

1024x768 is a good one size fits all. while there may be some people with ancient computers running at 800x600, most will probably have 1024x768 or larger.
my monitor's resomolution is 1680x1050, and 1024x768 is fine without being too small.
