I am looking at the following knives: ( Al Mar SERE 2000, Spyderco (folding) Lum Tanto, Emerson Spec-War (Clip point). I would like your opinions as to which one is best to cycle in as an EDC, for a back up self-defense blade, and why you would choose one over the other.

Once again.....thanks for all your help and input

I personally don't care much for the Specwar or the Lum Tanto.
The SERE 2000 however is one of those do-it-all kinda folders. Plenty stout, great steel, great grip, great lock-up and great blade shape.

I would go the SERE2K and not think twice. Fit and finish better than the others. Probably the most useful blade grind. Definately the most useful and comfortable handle. Fit and finish are custom quality. can you tell I love mine. Love mine enough to have it ride in style in a G2 sheath.

get a emerson SOCFK, similar to a spec war but waved and 139.95 from www.tacticaledge.com, imho the best emerson around, i have a green G10/black tanto and love it........and the price is right, and they are numbered and waved, great knife

get one ya wont be sorry i promise!!!!!!!!

greg

PS - would prefer it to the LUM, which i have owned, or the SERE which i have handled - the SERE is a close second imho, but second to the SOCFK nontheless imho - and i also have a SP spec war, just love the SOCFK

For self defense purposes NOTHING beats anything made by Emerson.
That Specwar clip point is awesome. The handle shape are perfect, the locks are strong and solid, and the blades are sharp and will not be defeated.

I would say get a black one.

Another for the SERE. No contest. Good ergos (though Emersons have great ergos, IMO), the stoutest construction, best bladesteel, and blade shape of the three.

Personally, I prefer the BM 710HS, but it's not on your list:(

The SERE 2000 gets my vote. If a custom maker was putting out the SERE, it would cost 3 times as much and people would still be buying them.

The only real improvemnt would be some redesigned thumbstuds, because those factory thumbstuds just suck. Filing off the top tier helps a bit, but not really enough.

I think I may go with the Al Mar. I looked at one at a knife store and quality was outstanding. I like the handles of the Emerson's, perhaps the most comfortable out there. However, the liner lock on my Commander is not real impressive In my opinion it is kind of "thin."

I noticed that someone mentioned the BM 710, great knife. Although I already have the BM AFCK Axis.

I like Spyderco products and since I no longer own a "tanto" blade in a folding knife I was looking at the Lum. I like the "Spyder Hole" much better than any thumb stud, however, the "hole" on the tanto blade looks kind of strange.

Thanks for your advice

Gonna have to vote for the SERE.

I vote out the Spec-War for it's unconventional edge-style. I vote out the Lum Folding Tanto for it's not very utilitarian tanto style (especially that relatively dull, but very strong, point).
