Which is better? K.I.S.S. or Gerber ridge knife?

Which one is better? The both look about the same; I’ve brought from Gerber but never from CRKT...any input?

I had the original Tanto KISS and I liked it a lot, it was fun to play with. It did cut, but wasn't really what I'd call a serious knife.

BTW, I currently have a CRKT SST KISS, a short stubby Wharncliff kind of thing. It's thicker guage than the original, it's not too bad.

You may want to look at the Schrade SIMON as well. It is the same sort of minimalist design with a couple of improvements.

The blade closes in such a way that the cutting edge is covered by a small aluminum guard to reduce the chance of accidental contact with the sharp edge. I consider this to be a major improvement over the the semi-exposed blade on the KISS series.

It also has a quick connect spring attachment of some sort.

I might have held a defective one, but the one I looked at @ Wal-Mart had a blade that didn't lay flush with the handle when closed. There was a very small gap, which could lead to you getting cut. The KISS that I have seen didn't have this problem. Take a look at the Gerber if you can, and see if they all have the potential problem I mentioned.

Mike

Edited to add: Just be careful with either one, as the exposed lock can become disengaged with a tight grip, especially if you rotate the knife while cutting. It's a light duty knife, and should work fine in that role.

Let me say up front that I am only familiar with the K.I.S.S.. I don't know if this compromises the validity of these comments or not. This aforementioned K.I.S.S. is a good knife as long as you keep it's function within the design parameters, i.e.: money clip/light duty knife. The blade design has never caused my fingers to get "bitten" or my pants pocket to get cut/torn. I think you would be pleased if you got one. Mine came from eBay.

WIll'em,

Email me you address and you can have the CRKT SST I have. ( I mod'ed it some, but you can get an idea)

Nah, its ok, I just wanted to know out of curiosity, wasn't really interested in getting one, just wanted some opinions, looked like a nice knife to give as gifts, thanks anyway.;)

That's a great gesture Dave!!! I'm always so glad to see so much generosity on these forums!! BTW, I would go with the KISS, I have had 4 and haven't really been dissapointed yet.

I have two of the CRKT Kiss knives laying here on my desk to be used as Christmas presents, they are nice little knives for their intended purpose. They have a nice gadget factor to them also because of they way they look and work, not bad knives for the money IMO.

Yeah I'd go with the CRKT also.., darn nice for the $$$ IMO.., and they actually hold up pretty well for medium duty sort of stuff...

I have them both. Like Medic1210 mentioned, the blade of my Gerber doesn't lay flush with the handle when closed :(

My wife bought me one of the small KISS/tanto with the gold-plated clip from a knife store at the local mall the other day. The blade was a little stiff to open at first, but that has loosened up a bunch since then. Seems to hold an edge pretty well. I made it really, really sharp via the judicious application of a cloth wheel mounted on my drill press and a little jeweler's rouge. I did notice last night that the pivot screw has backed out a bit so I don't have it with me today (didn't have time to go dig out an allen to tighten it up).

Anyway, it's a pretty little thing and I do admire its clean and simple design.

I've got the Short Stubby Thing (SST) version of the K.I.S.S, and I like it quite a bit. I originally got it as a dress knife, because I wear slacks to work, but it's seem some hard duty and held up great. The gold plating wears off after a while, but it still looks nice.
