I HAVE RECIENTLY PUT UP MY MINI GRIP, I HAVE CARRIED THIS KNIFE FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS.NOW I AM SPORTING A NEW SPYDERCO DELICA 4.LOVE THEM BOTH,I LIKE THE LOCK ON THE BENCHMADE,BUT THE CUTTING POWER OF THE SPYDIE....:confused:WHATS EVERYBODY'S TAKE?

These are comperable knives as far as quality, steel, price, popularity, and usefulness.

IMO Id rather have the grip. I like the axis much more.

I prefer the Delica, particularly with the wave feature. Both are great knives and you won't come to a conclusion because of thevaried preferences on these forums, which is a good thing IMHO. BTW, using all CAPS when posting is considered yelling.

I own a number of Spydercos, but I have never understood people's fasination with the Delica. The shape and feel of this knife is all wrong for me.

On the other hand, I love my Mini-Grip. Between these two knives, the Benchmade overwhelmingly gets my vote.

I prefer the delica over the mini grip. I found that the delica handle is more comfortable and the thumb hole offers far better purchase than the thumb stud.

The Delica, mine is in stainless, is a far better fit for me than my mini-grip (556 I believe) was. I'm a big guy and the mini-grip just didn't feel safe in my large hands.

I have 4 Delicas and 4 mini-Grips, so I obviously like both of them. The D4 is an extremely rugged knife for just about anything you want to do with a small-to-medium sized folder. I have a slight preference for holes over studs as openers because the holes are easier for me to find and more secure in a rush or in gloves.

The mini-Grip should cut about the same as the D4 if it's properly sharpened. You may need to work on the mini-Grip some to get it there. I think Spyderco sets the standard for factory edges. But all of the Grips and mini-Grips that I have can get to that same level, I just had to spend a little time with them in the beginning.

As far as I can tell, the AXIS lock is as strong as any locking system available and is perfectly ambidextrous, like the D4. The mini-Grip will be offered in more variety than the D4. There are 3 different steels available, along with several blade profiles and grinds. All of the steels in both knives are excellent EDC steels. The D4's VG10 and the mini-RSK's S30V are my two favorites, but mini-Grips in 154CM or D2 are going to work fine as well.

The one thing I really like about the D4 over the mini-Grip is the handle length. The mini-Grips are about 1/4" too short for me to hold comfortably. The D4 handle is a perfect length. OTOH, the roundness of the mini-Grip's handle is more comfortable to me than the flat sides of the D4.

Between the benchmade and the spydercos i'd have to go with the spydies. I've had a few of both and the spydercos just seem to fit me better and seem to be a better value for the money spent. later, ahgar

When I owned a mini-grip, I found that the handle was too short (and I have small hands) to hold comfortably when opening the knife, and that when I did thumb the blade open, my fingers came too close to the serrated edge for my comfort. I find that the delica is a much more ergonomic handle and the thumb hole is much more comfortable for me to use. My mini-grip was as sharp as any spyderco I've ever bought right out of the box though. On locks, I have used folding knives hard over the years and have never had a problem with a well executed (read: Spyderco) lockback. Just like the axis lock, a lockback is ambidextrous and can be used to close the knife one handed.

Its all going to come down to personal preference, and who says you can't carry both ;)

Why would anyone open an axis lock with the thumb studs????:confused::confused:

The blade opens very easily with a flick of the wrist. :):):)

Am I missing something here??:confused::confused:

I'm all for the D4. I liked its ergos better.

Ben,
Because flicking it puts a lot of stress, especially of the deformation sort, on the stop pin and the pivot. Also because it tends to scare people.
