Which is better?

I have the original SEAL PUP and it is one hell of a knife, I love it. However the SEAL PUP elite just entered the local army shop.

The guys at the store offered me to swap my old SEAL PUP for the new elite one.

My pup is in mint condition cause it isn’t very old (and it just stays looking new) but I was wondering should I go for the “elite” or stick with the classic.

Most of the marketing on sites and the like says its better or “improved” but I want to hear it from actual users not just ad’s

Is it really made with the same standards as the classic pup? Or is it just a all show new knife with the old one really being better? Is the black finish as tuff as the powder coating? Is the steal really better grade?

I'm a big fan of the SOG pup and I know that its one of those pieces of gear that wont fail. All my gear for hunting and camping must be the best no matter the cost. I’m considering getting the elite but just want to make sure it really is up to standard with that extra bit of “horsepower”

Any reviews or thoughts would help.

Thank in advance.

Jakub

The two knive look the exact same, but the pup elite is made with AUS8 were the pup is made with AUS6. besides that there didnt seem to be much different.

the Rc was 56-58 on the pup and 57-58 on the pup elite.

so if it isnt costing you anything I say go for it.

I'd hang on to what you have.....

and add a SEAL 2000 to your gear.... or a Tigershark !! or both !!

Cheers,

Carl

Hmm this is pretty interesting. Its really got me thinking.

Is there any reason to why I should just stick with what I have?

Is the elite not up to the standard?

Thanks for the help so far guys, I go to the shop next on Tuesday so I have till then to make up my mind and I need as much advice as I can get.

I'm not sure what i would do...i own the seal pup but havent felt the elite yet. The elite has better blade steel, but other than that i dont see much difference besides the powder coating and black blade coating. The black coating will show scratches easier than the powder coating will. Also if you are around water (especially salt water) alot i would definiteley stick with the original just because of the AUS-6 having a very good stain resistance.

There are a couple more subtle differences between the Pup and Pup Elite that have not yet been mentioned.

1. The Elite has a new handle shape that some feel is more comfortable in the hand. It seems to fit the natural curve of your palm better.

2. The black coating should be more durable than the powder coating as it is a TiNi coating. TiNi coatings are actually impregnated into the steel not just on the surface like the powder coating of the Pup. Therefore it should last longer than the original Pup.

3. Also the steel stock used for the blade is about 20% thicker on the Pup Elite. This will make the blade a little tougher when used for things that a knife should not be used for, such as prying. I am not coating this but just in case you are in a situation where you might need to it is there.

4. The spine of the knife is notched so it can be used for filing or notching with out damaging the cutting edge of the knife.

As you can see the Pup Elite does have a few things that I feel make it an improved version of the Pup. Whether you choose to keep the Pup or go for the Pup Elite you will have a great knife and one that you can depend on.

Thanks for all your help and advice guys, I appreciate it a lot.

Today being Tuesday I'm of to the city and I'm going to drop by the shop. Ill have a look at what knife feels better in my hand and take all the things you said into consideration but I'm leaning towards the pup elite.

Ill let you know which way it goes

Cheers guys.

G’day again guys.

Well I went with the Elite. And I must say I love it. I was pretty much hooked right from when I picked it up, it just feels that much more better, it feels more like it is an extension of your arm rather then a tool.

I'm going bush sometime soon after new years so ill have a chance to properly field test it then but from what iv seen so far it is mightily impressive.

Probably the only thing iv noticed is the out of the box sharpness isn’t as good as the original pup but this thing is a machine, I don’t need a razor out bush I need something that will do the job time and time again and this looks like the go.

Also one other thing, my mate at the shop pointed out that the place where the knife was manufactured was missing, the old one (correct me if I'm wrong as its from memory) has Sekie Japan on the bottom of the blade, this one doesn’t. Hence my friend was slightly doughting the quality, he said that the steel might have been from Taiwan? He also said that both those places are renowned for great steal and that the engraving might have been left out to not “downgrade” the knife? Is any of this true or what’s the go with it?

Just want to say thanks again guys for all your help and advice.

Cheers

From what I've read, the SEAL Pup Elite is made in Taiwan.

Best wishes,

Hmmm. Different handle shape, different coating, different blade, different Country. Is it still my Grandfather's axe?

so does anyone know which blade is of better quality? The Japan or Taiwan? This thread really struck a nerve with me since I own the original seal pup(seal 2000 also) and was looking at the elite to round out my collection. I've been looking at the tech bowie too, but that's another topic.
