Good afternoon and Happy New Year to you all I have a question for you all, with natural Arkansaw sharping stones, what is the smooths grit~ Black or translucent? which is the finest of the two stones. Thank you in advance

At least with the examples I have, my 'Surgical Black' hard Ark pocket stone is less aggressive and more a burnisher/polisher, than the translucent Ark I have (part of a tri-hone set). The translucent produces noticeably more swarf in sharpening, and is also less-prone to glazing as compared to my black hard stone. I've had to resurface the black hard a couple times, to keep it cutting at least some steel consistently. Even then, it's a lot more gentle in how it works, and seems to be the better polisher for steels suited to it.

The jet black is finer, around 1200 grit. Whereas the translucent is around 1000 grit ANSI. Look at Dan's whet stones site. He gives some good information on Arkansas stones. DM

One of my blacks is the finest.
I have a translucent and different black that are slightly less fine.
As to which is better? I don't know. My most used one is tan colored, probably medium rated.
