I've been looking for a new edc knife. :D I love my Leek (CKT) but I'm always afraid that I'll snap the tip off. :grumpy: I like the look of the Shallot (CKT) and the Skyline. What are the upsides  and down sides :thumbdn: of these and which would be the most reliable?

Considering your screen name, I'm assuming you like assited opening knives? In that case I'd recommend the Shallot, which has speedsafe. The Skyline is also a very popular model, but it's a manual flipper. Both are American made with 14C28N steel (same as your leek). Here are some of the differences for you:

Skyline 1760:
Manual flipper
2.3 oz.
3 1/8" blade
G10 handle
Liner lock
single position pocket clip

Black Shallot 1840CKT:
Speedsafe assisted opening
4.2 oz
3 1/2" blade
410 Stainless handle
Frame lock
Reversible pocket clip

I prefer the shallot over the skyline, but have both. It depends on your situation.

The skyline, is like a steak knife, it shouldn't really offend anyone, its hollow ground and slices well, its kind of perfect for edc.

The shallot is a little more tactical and aggressive, it is speed safe. Its flat ground. To me the bigger the better.

Thanks. :) Yeah I like spring assisted knives alot. :D I also carry them for a little bit of self defence. I like the look of both. I was leaning to the Skyline but I always thought it was spring assisted (:o). So what are the ups and downs of the Shallot?

I have all 3 (Leek in the composite blade version). I prefer the Shallot to the Leek because I don't really have a reason to need a smaller knife, and the ergos are better on the Shallot. The Leek makes a great small knife, though. The Skyline has really impressed me for the value. When I started collecting knives I loved Kershaw's A/O, but now I prefer the reliability and simplicity of manual folders. Before, I thought the Shallot was an incredible knife for the money. I still do, but now that I have a broader collection with some really nice knives, I'd say that the Skyline is the one I turn to the most.

Personally the shallot feel great any way you hold it, tip up/down, blade in/out. I don't think there is anything bad about the shallot. Its a little slippery, but the grip ergonomics are so good it doesn't cause me any grief.

I too have gone from loving A/O to leaning more toward a manual flipper, it should last longer with less maintenance. The skyline is basically meant to be used holding it the regular way, index finger in choil and thumb on top spine, it fits funny otherwise.

I do really like the leek too, but its a little to small for me. Could get an S30V G-10 version though.

Overall I think the shallot is the best choice for you as long as you are not worried about someone gasping at such a long knife. Its EDC-able, tactical and has a refined aesthetic appeal.

It looks like the Shallot is the best one for me. The Skyline looks (with one liner) like it would be kind of week. So far it looks like the Shallot would take more abuse.

Ya the skyline is great for edc, but if you start putting it to real work, I'd got for the steel frame shallot.

You should get the shallot and order the blade forums special edition blue skyline, so when the shallot honeymoon wears off, the new upgraded skyline will be out to keep you stoked.

I would love to do that, but I just spent most (just about all) of my money on a new guitar. :p

S30V Blur all day would be my choice ... Also the scallion is a great knife that fits between the leek and shallot.

Now if they only made a s30v and composite scallion I'd be sooooo happy. I love my Damascus ones. But scared to make them users.

A few cliff notes of my last few knives.

I have always had the same feeling with the Leek which was my first quality folder. I'm hard on knives (demolition construction). But I'm an assisted fan. I tried the Black Out and liked the blade and handle shape. But the empty feel left me hanging. After that I tried a Shallot. The Shallot is a great knife. I love the slim profile of the knife on it. But it lacks a thumb stud and the length on the blade here is a no go. Then I had to have a ZT. My First ZT was a 0350. I found I'm not a large folder fan. That and the jimping is a little to ruff on my hands. So thicker than a Leek, sturdier than the Black Out, shorter than the Shallot, softer in the hand than a 0350, ... Blur!!!1!! The Blur has been my EDC since it came in. Plain blade and all black. Perfect for me (exept I can't find it at the moment). I'm pickin up a Scallion to try when I can only have a smaller knife (and a Chive inbound).

This has been my journey. Good luck with yours.

I think I'm going to get the Shallot. I like 3"-4" blades so the blade langth is perfect. I never use the thumb studs so that shouldn't be a prob. I will get a Skyline at some point tho and then after that it will prob be an S30V Blur. :D

Sounds good! Just buy any of them that catch you eye now. You'll save in the long run on shipping. That's what I try to do.

1.) spring assist vs not spring assist
2.) satin finish vs grippy scale type finish
3.) weight, shallot heavier... skyline lighter
4.) belly on blade/ blade steel.... skyline has nice belly and they both have pretty good blade steel
5.) frame lock vs liner lock
6.) ergonomics, the handle on the shallot is wierd looking but comfortable, and the skylines handle is really straight
7.) pocket clip, shallot has basically the same one as the leek... not sure about the skyline
and thats about all i got for now... both great knives and i personally have used both extensively... good luck with this one, tough decision!
