Which is Faster??

This is something that I have pondered for a long time. Is a 3" bladed balisong faster to open than a 4" bladed balisong? I have played with very large butterfly knives that are 15" overall length & they take a long time to open. What does everyone think?

I always found the smaller ones to be faster, but you'd never know it by watching either of the moderators for this forum!

I have a fondness for using the latch opening methods and less handle to flip down and up just have to go a little faster, though the folks at work are just plain scared, one guy says after I work the knife he's afraid to tilt his head, that it might fall off....funny guy!

Right now I'm butterflyless, but have a BM42 enroute as I type, my hands are twitching!

Up until a few months ago, I only had the 3" verisons, a PC68, PC10 & BM35. I used to work at Cutlery World in 1986-87, so I got to play with all the different models, everything from Manila Folders, Frost, Rostfrei, and at the time Pacific Cutlery. I always liked the 3" ones the best. They were just the right size for my taste. They were lighter & skinnier and had perfect balance. Then a few months ago, I had the opportunity to get a BM45. Although it had the same narrow handles like my others, it was longer and a lot heavier, but with continuous use I got used to the weight. Now, that the BM42's are out, the Titanium handles have brought the weight/length ratio to a better balance for me. I'm still a little faster with the 3's, but the 42 is catching up. I wouldn't mind seeing a 3" Titanium version.

Reeko, 3" blades are faster in general, and more mistakable to me (only me?) in hasty situation like... I was lucky it was no defensive situation yet but showoffs only.

The smaller knives sure seem faster, but I'll be darned if I can remember enough freshman physics to back that up.

I personally like swinging a 6" handle.

a six incher? or a 5 inch blade with a six inch handle? Man what I woudl give to actually see or dare I say flip a 6 inch bladed bm. But yeah I guess it woudl basically be momentum = mass* accelaration.. or somethign...

I know it is damn faster to flip open a 3 incher than 5 incher (blade).. the thing is the longer thae blade the less chance you have to slip on the grip sinc you have more real estate to grab then...

now the question shoud be 30 series versus the 42.

After reading how the 3 inch blade is faster then the 4 inch blade, I compared the model 45 and the 3 inch model 10; the 10 was faster.

After getting the 42 yesterday. The 42 is faster than the model 10.

The titanium handles don't fell cheap at all.

I would like to see a 5 inch blade custom with a better steel blade and Titanium handles.

Hi, I just got my first butterfly, so I haven't really had experience with different sizes, but I'm interning at an engineering firm and heres my 2 cents:

The smaller one should go faster. The tip of the smaller one will go slower than the tip of the longer one (like crack the whip) since it doesn't have as far to travel, but the decrease in mass, air resistance, etc. will mean that you will need less of a force to turn it, so if you keep a constant force (your wrist or whatever at a given strenght) it will move faster.

Hey, What can I say.... I love the 3" BM30 series the best... First the size is less offensive in public situations. I use mine often in public. Diners to fine dinning establishments. I like the fit in my hand, it's "just right". It fits in your pocket or in the small Buck Knife sheath (the "duke").. ALSO the blade to handle ratio is better. WHY is my BM45 have such long handles? GAD! You could lop off almost 1/2 inch! (well feels that way). For the self defence issue, maybe bigger is better, but I have a concealed pistol permit

But in reality I avoid conflict call me chicken ... it's cheaper all the way around Lawyers Dr.'s etc. To sum it up, I like the 3" and hope BM comes out with a 3" version I'll buy 10, 5s and 5 plain edge. That should hold me till I'm pushing up grass... Any one have a spare BM30-35?
