I am torn between two Spydies for my next EDC purchase. The two choices are the Native and the ProGrip. I would appreciate hearing opinions from those forumites who have experience with both models.

P.S. I just purchased a PE Leek the other day. Excellent knife for anyone who may be contemplating getting one.

Well, I got a BRK Native...I don't like it one bit.

I know the fit and finish isn't up to real Spyderco standards, but that is not what I am talking about. I just don't like the design.

I have only got a native, and use it quite often. It's quite safe in the hand, that's the reason. Teh finger grooves were terribly sharp, it took a while to sand them smooth.
The Pro-Grip will be the better choice, I guess.

Hey there,

I'd say go with the pro-grip (esp the stainless model) it's a real workhorse, and has a great shape and feel. if you can, look at both in a store -- once you hold the SS pro-grip in your had your mind will be made up. Plus, I don't like the new swtichable clip on the natives, I find they come loose all the time, and aren't as attractive.

that's my .02

I'd go for the Native. Great ergonomics, excellent steel (440V is a bit hard to sharpen, though...)

The Native in any of it's variation(s);)

"..and little Sir John, with the nut brown bowl & his brandy in a glass..
..and little Sir John with the nut brown bowl..proved the strongest man at last..." Cecil Sharp, 17th Cent.

AET (ATE on the Spyderco "home" forum ;))

The progrip is a nice knife. The native is recommended by many. But, honestly, there are lots and lots of knives to choose from in that price range.

Why is it narrowed down to only those two?

I personally don't much care for the native. IMHO, it looks a lot like a dagger - not very sheeple friendly. The hole is too recessed into the handle to be easily openable. The overall length is short, and with the somewhat loose clip on the FRN version.. it comes out of the pocket on accident easily. (Thats how I lost mine.. :( )

A lot of people think the native is nearly ideal, so YMMV. The FRN one is definitely a great value.

As for the pro-grip, I've never purchased one, so I can't speak from personal experience. Its been around for a very long time, so it has to be pretty popular. The rubber grip metal bodied pro-grip seems like a good value.

I would suggest that you also look at the delica, endura, and the salsa.

You might also want to look at the benchmade griptillian, the cold steel voyager series, or maybe something from Columbia River knife and tool.

Good luck!

Thanks to all of you for the opinions to date. To baraqyal, I already own an Endura and two Delicas. I also have several from CRKT. I agree all are excellent knives. I don't have any Benchmades or Cold Steel. Frankly, I'm just a big fan of Spydies and want to get another in that price range. Us gov't employees can't afford these high dollar models.
Thanks,
t_f :)

If you are right-handed get the ProGrip. If you are a "lefty" (like me), you'll want the Native, due to its' reversible clip.

The Native's finger groove just doesn't feel good in my hand. The Pro Grip, however, feels great. So I guess it just depends on how they feel in your hand. Good luck.

From One stop knife shop (plus shipping);
The native FRN runs $56, and the native II is $62.
The progrip FRN is $46. The SS model is $75.
The Salsa is $60, and has the excellent compression lock.

If you are willing to look at the secondary market, you could probably find them a bit cheaper. But, you can also find many other knives in that same price range. I've seen LNIB Military models go for $75 shipped. I recently got a Lil Temperance for not much more. If money is the big issue and you're willing to get one thats not brand new, I recommend that you try the exchange forums. You can get really good deals if you know what to look for.

I am also a big spydie fan. But, other brands can also give you good value for your money. The benchmade griptillian in both sizes should be available for about the same price and has the excellent axis lock. The cold steel voyagers aren't bad either. (Smokey Mtn Knifeworks has a deal going on some CS knives. You might want to check it out) Other benchmades can be found for very good prices in the exchange forums - non-axis AFCK's sometimes go very cheaply. You may also be able to trade some of your less used knives for what you're looking for.

Anyways, check out your options. Sometimes, for the same money, you can get a "better" knife. Not that there's anything wrong with the progrip or native.

Sorry for the lengthy post. Good luck! :)
