I have never sharpened any of my knives before and I want to do so, but I am afraid I will damage my blades. Which kit or kits are the easiest to use? And does easiest neccessarily mean the best or fastest? Also, how much would your recommended kit set me back? Thanks.

The Spyderco Sharpmaker is the least likely to unpretty your knives while letting you make them as sharp as your patience will allow. They sell all over the place for $40-60USD.

I like the Lansky kit with the diamond stones. I've used this kit for years and never had a blade get messed up with it--only a great new edge!

The $26 knife grinder from Sears turns very slow.If you use a regular grinder, they spin so fast that half the blade is gone before you even know it. I use a 500 or 600 sandpaper and that works pretty good for me. That way even at high speeds the sandpaper will wear out before it can do any real damage to the knife. You just have to be careful not to heat up the metal.

I found the edge pro pretty easy and prefer it to the sharpmaker. Also like HandAmerican honing strops and kits - they are pretty easy to use and get good results.

For quick, repeatable, inexpensive, and downright real good: SharpMaker
For top of the line: EdgePro

I just bought a sharpmaker and I have to say.. its pretty good. All you need is a steady hand to keep a verticle angle and an existing set bevel less then 40 degrees on your blade and it works like they say it should.
All my knives shave without too much effort with the sharpmaker, that includes the kitchen knives.
For the price.. I think its the bees knees :)
