The Mission MPK Titanium or the Busse Combat Steel Heart E handled knife with infi steel? Which one do you prefer or would prefer and why?

Unless you absolutely need the non-magnetic or non-corrosive qualities of titanium, I think pretty much any steel blade of better quality than 420J2 will out-perform it in most "knifely" tasks. The INFI steel is pretty impressive stuff. It will definitely hold an edge better, chop better, and all around be a better blade except for being non-stainless. I'm not sure the thickness of Mission's Ti, but I would guess that the Busse will be stronger in a pry-bar role as well.

Ti is not a super smashing great material for a knife edge. INFI steel looks VERY good. If it were my cash I would go for the INFI blade. If you need a dive knife however...

Titanium is "tougher" then steel. I have a Mission MPK and it also holds an edge very well...does not "feel" sharp but still cuts and cuts. I have also owned a Busse Battlemistres and the Basic 7 and the Lean Mean Street too. But better depends on intended use. For just general camp type useage I would go with the steel but if I really needed something tough and was anywere near salt water I would go with the titanium.

Mark6, I am somewhat surprised that INFI was OK as a dive knife! Are you using a protective product at all? I figured edge holding like that would mean lower rust resistance? Then again it is a secret material...

General - I had a Busse BM for about 6 months... never saw a spot of rust...

I've gathered from posts scattered all over the place that it is a very corrosion resistent material.

Go for the Busse

Both knives work fine. It really comes down to what you want to do with your knife.

The titanium BTW is also far lighter (about 1/3 the weight). This has its own benefits and weaknesses; which is why it comes down to your intended use.

Mission has made some strong statements about thier Ti including the ability of the edge to resist damage from hard impacts. Has anyone hit anything hard during chopping and if so how does the edge hold up? They also state it will outperform steel in very abrasive cutting because of the very wear resistant oxide that forms on the Ti - any comments? What about its flexibility - how far will it bend before taking a set or breaking? How hard is it to do this compared to a decent piece of steel of similar geometry?

Like others have said, for anything other than a dive knife (or a knife that can't be magnetic), the SH will FAR outperform the Mission. Although the SH is far heavier, this allows heavy chopping with the blade. Titanium doesn't hold a good edge. That's the bottom line. Almost ANY steel or stainless steel will outperform it in this area. INFI is one of the very best steels on earth, and it therefore far outperforms Titanium in edge holding, and it has legendary toughness also. It, for example has been bent 30 degrees and has come back true (the knife being tested was the Battle Mistress). I would most definitely go with the SH unless you will use it as a dive knife or need a non-magnetic knife. Even as a dive knife, the SH shouldn't be too bad. I've heard it has corrosion resistance similar to D-2 or even ATS-34. Plus, the crinkle coat on the blade is very durable and will not allow the blade to rust. An interesting thing about when INFI does rust is, it appears to hardly affect the edge of the knife, one of the worst things about the rusting of conventional steels.

Get that Steel Heart 2 E!! I've got one, and I love it.
