Which is what?!?

Hey, All,

I'm slowly plodding along on getting the ol' forge built (sometimes gainful employment is a curse...), and I'm sort of looking down the road at possible improvements I may want to make, and which I may need to allow for in my design.

As I want to use this forge for HT, I understand that it's reasonably important to be able to control the temp, which will be much easier if I can get a good, exact reading. Thus, I'm considering putting a temperature gauge on the thing, but I don't know if I'm thinking about a pyrometer, or a thermocouple.

What's the difference? I have been led to understand that they do much the same thing, so which is what, and which would be more useful for my need?

Kal

You will need both - the thermocouple is the part that you put inside the forge and run a thermocouple wire to the pyrometer. The pyrometer is the read out, it can be analog or digital.

Bill speaks the truth. I bought my set-up from Omega. Here is the toll free # 1 (800) 82-66342 . Tell them what you want to do and they will transfer you to a technician. Dont get too fancy with the pyrometer, all you want to do is tell temperature up to 2499 deg. F. They can send you a catalog to look at also. Nice people.

Ahhhh, so...it becomes clearer...

I popped out by their website, a minute ago...tons of stuff out there to look through. Quick question for you gentlemen...how does one mount one of these suckers? I see protective tubes...are they a requirement? Else how does one keep from the wiring melting as heat gets conducted back along the thermocouple?!?

This would be the "Mad Scientist" phase of the Knifesmithing field, no? Next project? A TESLA coil atop my forge for arc-welding my guards!!!

:D

Thanks for the info, gentlemen!!
