1) Which is your favorite Victorinox SAK and why?

2) Also, which SAK would you pick to carry on your key chain and why?

Any other comments regarding Victorinox Sak's are also welcome

Thanks,

I love my delux tinker. It has a small blade which is very useful most things I need to cut on a daily basis, a large blade for larger tasks, scissors for trimming mole skin for blisters while hiking, and no corkscrew which I have always found useless, as I don't drink. As for a keychain I think a classic is nice.

Starchaser,
Purchase your SAK after deciding what needs/wants you have for the tool then deciding which model fills the most of these needs. I own a bunch and sometimes trade them off depending what activities are on hand.

My “favorite” is the Soldier/Pioneer because of the thicker blades and tools. The alox handled models just seem to be of a more solid build than the plastic handled ones.

Between the SAK I’m carrying on any given day and my small Sebenza, I’m prepared for lots of tasks before having to return to the shop or the truck.

I don’t carry a keychain knife but any of the Classic-sized models should work well.

Thanks Dan,

Now that you say that, I am really just looking for a key chain knife but was also was interested in seeing what everyones favorite SAK'S were. Maybe I will start a thread to see what most people prefer as a key chain knife.

Thanks,

Starchaser,
The classic series from Victorinox will work just fine for a keychain knife if you want additional tools besides a blade.

If you're after just a blade, consider the Spyderco Ladybug.

The Ladybug, despite its size, is capable of doing real cutting chores. Much bigger, more capable blade, than the Classic series. I have some of each. You can't really to worng with any of them.

For a bigger keychain knife consider the Victorinox alox handled Cadet. I just got one of them, but have not really had an opportunity to work with it yet.
Good luck with your search.

I like the Recruit and the Soldier. They are the simplest of the "full-size" SAKs. I use the Recruit because it has the tweeezers. All I really need is a blade, bottle opener, and flathead screwdriver (and those tweezers).
I don't like the larger SAKs because they are so thick, and I have a multi-tool, anyway.
btw, I keep the Recruit on my keychain.

Favorite- Swiss Tool

Keychain- Any of them that have a blade, awl, and wood saw. And a bail, so you can get your keys on it

. Why, with those three tools you can do all of it pretty much.

I guess the Classic would be handy on the key-chain (especially the new translucent colors).

My favorite SAK was the Pioneer, but I have found one I like even better:
The Electrician!
I just bought one this weekend.
It's just like the Soldier model except it has a small electrician's blade instead of the can-opener.
I noticed that the "key-ring" part of my Pioneer was starting to tear holes in my pants pockets (the Electrician has no key-ring).
I do wish the Electrician came in the red alox.
Happy hunting.

My fav SAK is the Cadet. It's light and super tough, rides great in the pocket or on the keychain. Just for kicks, I put one through a semi torture test over the past year to see how well it held up, it's field dressed a deer, opened dozens of cans, popped the top off a few sudsies, cut open boxes, cleaned and filed nails, etc, etc, etc., AND it still looks and works like new!

Thanks for the suggestion Dan and sgtmike88. I will definitely take a look at the SAK Cadet.

I love Victorinox SAK's, but IMO the best ones for keychain use are the Classic and the Executive. The Mini-Champ is also a great choice...anything from the Classic to Executive length.

My favorite large SAK is the liner-locking Trailmaster. My favorite mid-sized may be the Tinker, but I also love the Soldier. I also got a Pioneer over the weekend, and spend some time with a file to smooth off the edges on the protrusion that holds the key ring. That part is made of sharp aluminum, whereas the key ring protrusion on the standard models is made of polished, rounded stainless steel as part of the backspring.

My favorite is the Spartan since it has everything I need for travel and camping, is light and compact. I used to use it on my keyring but it got replaced with a Micra, mainly because the Micra is smaller in size.

I've been carrying a regular tinker for years, and have always been happy with it. I think the phillips driver and wire stripper is used almost as much as the blade.
Does anyone have the mariner or navigator?

I've never liked the models with the scissors, and I'll second the -who needs a corkscrew- sentiment from above

I suppose that would be my Craftsman.

My wife and I flew to Chicago this summer and I wanted a Swiss Army knife that had pliers in case I wasn't allowed to board with my Leatherman PST. Also, airport security is supposed to have a much friendlier attitude toward SAKs than other folding pocket knives.

I bought a Craftsman because it has pliers, a wood saw, a file/metal saw, and a phillips screwdriver. This is the SAK I carry every day.

The only thing I don't like about it, and this is a small quibble, is that the pivot point of the phillips screwdriver is offset from the end of the knife. When the phillips is fully extended, it is perpendicular to the body of the knife. That setup can be awkward at times.

I also have an old Explorer my wife carries in her purse and an Classic on my keychain.

My favorite right now is a deluxe tinker, but I think the workchamp is going to replace it, as soon as I get it..

On another matter, does anyone have any experience with Wenger customer service ?
Reason I ask is that I recently picked up a Wenger Mountaineer at a great price, but I made the mistake of cleaning it with a chemical degreaser! The result being that the slide lock "melted" to the handles, so releasing the lock blade is a hassle now, at best.
I'm thinking of sending it off to Wenger to see what they can do..

mikemck,

Can you get the WorkChamp in the US?
I was under the impression it was available overseas only.

Well, I tried to locate one for sale here in the US, but I couldn't find one. What I did find was someone here on bladeforums selling one, and manage to trade him out of it

Well, The Victorinox Workchamp arrived today, and it's truly awesome!
The usual excellent Victorinox quality, and a very useful knife without a lot of useless implements on it.
It is quite huge though, so I'll have to see if I can reasonably carry this monster around in my pocket.
