I want to buy a kabar styled blade. my choice is currently down to either the Camillus USMC or the Ontario Spec Plus Marine Combat. which one would you choose and why?

I have a Camillus one and it is great. I have used it heavily and it has held up great. I never had Ontario stuff before but I would have to go with Camillus again if I had to just based on past flawless performance.

Ah, never mind.

I already read this thread, and it gives quite some information on the Camillus, but no direct comparision to the Spec Plus by Ontario. (The spec plus isn't the currently military contract knife, is it?)

I beleive Ontario is the current primary contract holder, however, the spec plus isn't the issue model. The issue has, of course, the standard leather washer handle with antifungal treatment. I have a Kabar kbar and a Camillus kbar. The Kabar is pretty, but the Camillus gets the use.

Why not a KABAR Next Generation? At least it's got a lanyard hole. But then again, it's about 2-3 times the price.

Just a thought.

The Kabar next gen. is not an option due to the cost and the steel used. I wanted a 1095 blade, as I don't own any carbon steel knives up to now (except some opinels). and the D2-kabar is way too expensive.

Ontario currently holds the contract to produce the Fighting Utility knife for the U.S. military. Camillus, however, is the company that designed the knife that is still issued today unchanged. They also have made more F.U. knives than anyone else. Most importantly, though, is the fact that Camillus has better quality control than Ontario, not to mention that if you do have a problem or a question about the knife you can go to the Camillus forum and ask Will or Tom. Camillus has a real "history" with this knife, as they are the only company that has made the F.U. continually since 1943. Kabar has changed hands several times, and ceased production of the F.U. for quite some time. Ontario hasn't made the knife nearly as long, and won the current contract because of a lower bid. Camillus, not content to rest on it's laurels, has also continued to improve upon it's method of heat treating the knife.
