Which Kami?

Hi Folks,
just held a new BAS in my hands and was completely impressed. This BAS had brass inlay in the blade and the Kami's logo was a sunburst. Can someone please enlighten me as to which Kami this is?
Thanks,
Alan

Is it recent new or just new to you? I keep coming up with Sher but I don't think he's worked for HI for awhile.

I have a tough time remembering them all. I've seen the mark you describe though so maybe somebody else is using it.

Somebody will be along shortly I reckon.

Most likely a Lachhu if of recent make. His mark is a full sun with usually six to ten rays, basically what he's comfortable with doing at the time.
A Sher full son has about twenty rays and would be Pre U.B. marked. Sher later went to a half sun. If you wish to post a picture many here could verify it. I'm pretty certain it's a recent Lachhu.

Big Bore, my Sher sun with beau coup rays is not pre-U.B. I had it custom made. The mark also jives with my kami cartouche catalog.

I can not possible argue the point, I'm a newbie. I've read it here on more than one occasion. Apparently the markings by the Kami's vary as well as their interpretation of design. Or, perhaps others cartouche catalogs indicate differently. If so, my bad. My most humble apologies. However, the cartouche in question is most likely Lachhu for the reasons mentioned, highly doubt it was produced by Sher which is my original point. Thanks for your correction.

Lachhu doesnt do the rising sun as far as I know. If its rising with a bunch of rays it is most likely Sher and possibly old stock. Lachhu has as few as four or five rays to many more but is always full sun! I cant blame him at all. Man wasnt made to get up before chickens ...lest hes goin fishin er huntin:D.
Pic helps. Devanagari dont lie.

I have two blades made by Lachhu Kami... the rather simple "maker's mark" consists of a "Sun" with 8 rays.

It's a circle with 8 lines (rays) extending from it. 2 rays at twelve o'clock, 2 rays at three o'clock, 2 rays at six o'clock, and two rays at nine o'clock.

Hope this helps. I can post a picture if it's needed. I have vetted the marks in some detail along with the Devanagari Script characters which accompany them.

Sorry folks,
I cannot post a picture of it. It is a full sun with at least 6 rays of varying lengths emanating from it. My sister recently bought the BAS as a gift to a long time exec of her company. I have to tell you that I was extremely impressed with the ergonomics of the Khuk. It was very lively in the hand, and the brass inlays and fit and finish were magnificent. I have relayed the forum address to the recipient, so we may be hearing from him soon.

Is it marked with "U.B." on the side opposite the makers mark (the "sun" you describe)?? This is an important first identifying step that will help us determine when the blade was made (approximately).

In my experience, on one side of the blade (right as you hold it) you find the "U.B." mark indicating that the blade was made AFTER "Uncle Bill's" passing (there are also 2 Devanagari script characters on that side of the blade). If it isn't marked with the U.B. then it was made before he passed. On the opposite side (the left side as you hold the blade), you will find the makers mark and the makers initials in Devanagari script).

In the Sticky's at the top of the forum you will find the "Sticky: How To - New Members Please take time to Read the : Himalayan Imports Link Library". In that thread, you will find a number of posts/sub-threads about the different Kami marks used by each maker. Keep in mind that some of those posts no longer provide the pictures needed to visually ID the makers from the past or those working today.

I had a heck of a time ID'ing some of my Makers Marks but I'm almost 100% positive now, about who made each of my blades.

Since Karda is no longer a forum member many of the pictures he'd posted no longer work. I plan to create a thread (in the near future), with pictures of the makers marks of the Kami's that I have that I am sure of. The Kami mark guide "sticky's" need some updating.

It was marked with U.B. and the Devanagari characters were under it. I am assuming that since the Devanagari letters were followed by periods, that they are the Devanagari equivalent of U. B. This BAS was a recent purchase from HI.

Sounds like Lachhu to me, but hopefully this answers your question

This is Lachhu

And this is also Lachhu

Also, if I recall correctly, the Devanagari under the U.B. is the name of the shop, Bir Ghorka (don't quote me on the spelling, I'm sure it's wrong)

Thanks SG, I thought I'd gone off the deep end. Then again, perhaps I have.
