I've been searching and searching...a few different khuks have come up as good drawknives, but nothing sticks out in the search.

I've been working with my 18" BAS, and it pulls off a lot of wood, but the blade angle is a bit thicker than I'd like. The back of the blade doesn't make a very good grip either. Maybe a different one would be more comfortable.

Do any woodworkers have an favorite for this?

Ive been using my 12" AK to put in curves, in a draw knife like fashion. But as for a straight use as a typical draw knife, maybe a kobra, since its a little straighter? I dunno, I do light work with a khuk as a draw knife, but I dont think Id feel comfortable putting alot of heft, with no second handle. Then again, I suppose it depends on the type of wood, and the sharpness of the khuk.

Might try one with a less obtuse edge bevel, like the Gelbu special or kobra. They have less obtuse edge geometries than AKs

A lighter version of the same knife would probably have a thinner spine and therefore a shallower angle.

Dunno. Depending on how much you're drawknifing it might be better to get an actual drawknife.

Any of 'em long enough to get both hands on would work as a drawknife. If you've got some way to secure the wood you're working on, they also work fine as a plane (i.e. pushing away from yourself). I've been doing some "camp improvements", and I've used my khuks to split two by fours into two by twos, well maybe more like two by one and a halfs by the time I've planed them true and smooth. They work just fine and really impress the young troops when I do some "fancy cutting". 'Course I always tell 'em, "don't try this at home".;)

My 20 inch Sirupati by Bura makes a very good draw knife. I have no problem with the blade being too thick. Even the 18" does a pretty good job. Just my two cents.

Howdy Sarge, How are things going for you and the guys? Fairly secure by now I hope. :) :)

Who are you and what have you done with Bruise? :p

Agree with Pappy. The sirupatis work pretty well here. Depends on who made the khuk. Have found the sirupatis to have thinner edges than the kobras or Gelbus overall. Have a 21" Gelbu by Durba thats got em all beat on about everything. WWII would probably work good too. Come to think of it that Cherokee Rose would be real good as draw knife.

Are you sure tha BAS is 18"? Didn't know they made them in that length.

The truth is, I get the BAS mixed up with the WWII, and I'm not even 100% sure that it's 18" and not 17.5" or whatever (I guess I'll go measure it....but then I'm not sure which two points I'm taking the distance between).
Any mistakes here are mine and result solely from inadequate exposure to HIKV, followed by partial cranial rectitis. :)

I think that you will find the over all length of the BAS to be about 15" in most cases. The WWII's will be 18" and 16.5". Don't be surprised about a 1/4" difference from one khuk to another. They are hand made by different people. The weight varies to but I don't think most of us worry about that too much. Butt Cap to point is how I measure mine and what Uncle Bill advertises I have found to be pretty darn accurate. Another .02 cents.:) :)

Make sure you are wearing body armor. Using a khukuri as a draw knife is unsound. If you must do, then use it as a plane
and push the edge away from you.
