Which khukuri is right for me?

I know these threads probably come up pretty often and are terribly annoying, but I am completely stumped and need some advice.

I want a khukuri. First, it cannot be over 125 dollars. I am a student on a budget and it is simply impossible for me to spend more. (Well, not impossible, but wouldn't be terribly smart)

As far as use goes, it will likely mostly be used to get branches out of my way while hiking/hunting (well after i'm done hunting anyways, I don't suppose slashing through branches is particularily stealthy). I also want something that can be used for stuff larger than small branches - I'm not going to go chop down a pine tree or anything, but I'd like something versatile. So I've narrowed it down to three.

15" AK
BAS 15"
WWII 16.5"

So, is there one which I should get over the others, or is this simply a matter of pulling one out of a hat? Are there any others I should consider?

Thanks!

For all around versatility, IMO go with the AK. You may even want to consider the 12" AK. It's what I have and it's phenominal. Most folks here opt for something bigger, but for me, it's just the right size. Most of my khukuri use is similar to what you have stated, and I've never once felt the 12" AK was lacking in that dept. It's cheeper and lighter too.

I have the 12" Ang Kola whick is great "mini" choppper, I alos have the BAS which is a great medium chopper. If I had to start all over I'd go with the BAS to start with its very handy. The only bad thing about the 12" AK is the grip is a little small for me when doing alot of chopping (I think it's time to modify it a little for me)

Well SJ does a particular one of these pull at your heart strings or do you have these three picked because you think they would do the most good?

If you have read any threads on this page and the next then you know I am partial to the 17" Foxy Folly and the 17" - 18" BGRS, both in an around a 26 to 28 ounce weight of course.  :D
Both cut like a much heavier khukuri and are of a proper size to get most anything needing done, done... and without weighting you down too much.
Some folks can't say enough good about the 15" AK as well as the others you have listed but AFAIC the 15" models of anything lack a bit in the horsepower ratings.
But a lot of it depends on how big an old boy you are and how strong you are as well. So get the one that tickles your fancy and use what everyone else says as a guideline because simply you are the one that's gonna be using it!!!! ;) :D :p

brother
first you need to accept that you WILL ultimately buy more than one of these beauties
then you will stop struggling with the decision and perhaps buy whichever of your chosen three first presents itself here at a better price
or maybe some other which catches your eye in tomorrows DOTD (if you are as impatient as me and must have one now)

my point is simply not to worry over it
just get one
you will be happy
get another
you will be happier still
there is no wrong choice

Fifteen inch ang khola is the perfect hiking, browsing, camping khukuri!

Twelve inch ang khola is the perfect hiking, browsing, not-cutting down tree khukuri. Most camp fires are made with browse wood, anyway. Twelve inch is less likely to draw attention to itself, as well.

Gawd luv these other people, but bigger isn't necessarily better, and YOU have to carry the darned thing.

Villagers generally have a slightly bigger handle, and are just as much "wow" blades.

We don't handle prices here. Email Yangdu and ask her to keep her eye out for what you are interested in. She's not in the correspondence business, but never forgets stuff and will keep her eye out for you.

Read the safety thread.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to wait for a few days and see if anything pops up in the deal of the day threads, but I seem to always get to the threads after everything is already sold. If nothing comes up I'm just gonna get a 15" AK. Thanks!

I gotta stay in the WWII camp for all-round utility. My personal packing around khuk was a BAS, but the AK will do a bit more work. The 16.5" handle fits my hands better, while the 15 inchers require either modified grip or smoothing out the top horn. Snag whatever comes up in Deals of the Day (possibly including a Pen Knife in your list) and you'll be happy.

Welcome to the forums, and read the safety thread!

I absolutely love the folly and m43 like the guy said there like pringles once you pop you can't stop. I would recommend a foxy folly myself they can handle it all. They are extremely light and very thin profile easy to take limbs off and tall grass. They also can handle 12" diameter tree's. I definatly agree the magic of the khukris will guide you to the right khukris.

I have one last request if anyone will humour me, could someone post a picture of a 15" AK and a 16.5" WWII in hand? There are a lot of pictures around but without seeing someone hold one I am having trouble gauging the relative size of the blades and grips.

WWII 16.5! here's an in hand pic of mine

Yeah, I had considered the bigger ones, but I want to stay in the 15-16.5 inch range for one main reason, being that I always take this beauty -

- into the bush with me, and she ain't exactly light, so I don't really want a giant knife slapping around and my side to add additional weight. Not to mention I'm about 5'8" and 130 pounds so I'm not exactly a big guy either.

I'm just ordering up the WWII now. I ended up flipping a coin between it and the AK. I am super excited to get it and I'll make a thread when it arrives!

Good choice, I don't think you could have made a mistake picking anyone of the three you mention.

I have the BIG 3 in the garage, maybe not my favorites but definitely my users. Good luck. :)

Well I never ordered the WWII because of indecision - I decided to sleep on it. Today a BAS came up for $50 in the deal of the day and I just couldn't resist! Woo!

Hello everyone. New member here from British Columbia, Canada.

After seeing the photo of the WWII, I finally made up my mind and ordered one last night.

I usually strap a bolo from the Philippines to my backpack when I'm hiking in the mountains near where I live. It helps when I'm bushwacking through devil claw and thick brush.

I need to change to something a little more compact for hunting and dressing game...hence the WWII 16.5".

I'll post photos when I get it. :)
