Which khukuri would be good in the kitchen?

Just wondering if anyone has any khukuris set aside for kitchen duty? I'm thinking of getting some for my wife to use. The current knives that she uses get dull very fast. At this time she is using my Western bowie for a clever.

What would you guys recommend?

boning & carving = 12" & 15" Sirupati
paring = Kumar Karda

You can have a set made with the same handle material.

Might I suggest that you add a Kobra to the above mentioned set. It would fit in great with the others and would definitely be helpful in most any work needed. Not to mention keeping those pesky kids from running through and knocking things off the stove and onto the floor.

Just a thought here.

Although I don't use my khukuris in the kitchen my first choice would be my small sirupati. It is easy to handle and light. Most women have small hands. A larger khukuri could be hard to hold onto, especially if your hands may be damp or wet for some reason. This is just my preference. If you want an expert opinion you need to ask Yangdu. I'm pretty sure she uses khukuris in the kitchen and yard too.

The flat of the blade on the "ugly duckling" villager is perfect for pounding/flattening chicken breasts, veal cutlets, steaks etc. to make very thin sclices for veal cordon bleu,steak Diane, and such. Just wrap meat in plastic wrap, place on (sturdy) cutting board, and proceed to take out your aggressions

. I imagine any 15" khukuri (BAS, AK) would serve the purpose.
 
Yangdu no longer has license to use a khukuri in the kitchen. She has destroyed too much stuff so she must use her khukuri outside on an oak cutting board made of 2x8 and about a foot long.

If Yangdu is that dangerous in the kitchen you better walk a fine line. Something tells me you could be in trouble if she got mad. HA! ha!! (I'm just kidding, Yangdu you are very sweet!!)

Thanks guys and gals for the advice! Uncle how much for the 12" Sirupati? Will the polymer cutting board hold up?
 
Thanks, Howard. Now everybody understands why khukuris are not allowed in the kitchen.

BA wait for a thin khukuri to come in. I think these are going to be the best for kitchen use. Thin enough to do some slicing and tough enough to go thru bones without damage to the blade -- just like that katana you tested.

My 14" village khukuri makes it in the kitchen fairly often. Great for chopping and slicing meats. The curved edge (rocking the blade helps a bit) can be a pain for chopping vegatbles though.

There is, of course, only 1 answer to this question; the 25" Kobra...

(Hands up everybody who *knew* I was going to say that...)

You can cut up veggies and stuff with the karda, crack eggs and punch holes in cans with the chakma; and if you're unlucky enough to have your kitchen invaded by wolves, bears or fire-breathing dragons, the main blade'll take care of them, too.
 
Will is an early user of khukuris in the kitchen and probably has more experience in this area than anybody except Yangdu. She holds the record for the greatest number of cutting boards destroyed and other general household destruction.

Yeah, the 25" kobra is good in the kitchen, especially if you're into "do it yourself" steaks and leatherware...

I gave our temple president my Kumar 12" Sirupati in honor of his installation, figuring that the flat of it, used as a gavel, would call a meeting to order with some authority, but the size is small enough that everybody won't run out of the room screaming. Now I'll have to see what the sisterhood ladies think of my antler-handled 12" Bura for bread and cake, as a step up from the Cold Steel Vaquero Grande I've been loaning them!
