I would like to purchase a large khukuri (18-20"). Should I go with the Ang Khola, the M43, the Sirupati, or one of the others? Mainly looking for using it for chopping.

Yes to what Steve said. Make sure you order one with some weight- at least 27 ounces or more.

What ferguson said :) .

At first I wanted one mainly for chopping, another for slicing ham n' beef and such...

Thanks guys. Couple more questions:

1. Is the 20" really as unwieldy as some say? I want something I can chop comfortably with for a good period of time as well as something that I can leave by the side of the bed in case of an emergency. Is the 18" a better choice?

2. Are all of the Ang Kholas full tang or just the Chiruwa Ang Kholas? Is that critical for durability?

Well, I hope for a Chiruwa Ang Khola for Christmas.

Christmas morn when the rooster says "Cock-a-doodle-doo" for me...any Khukl-dooo :D

There are a few guys who, if they said something I disagreed with, would cause me to seriously re-think my opinion - Ferguson, Yvsa, Satori (Dave), Antonio Cejunior and of course Yangdu :)

For "slicing ham n' beef and such", may I suggest considering the Cold Steel Mini-Bushman. Not normally a Cold Steel fan, I recieved the Mini-Bushman as compensation for a complaint to a dealer about a mis-advertized kuk and it impressed the hell out of me. Just my dos pesos and YMMD.

Chopping= 18" AK or GRS. I don't think you'll get as much chopping ability from the M43 or Sirupati.

You may be able to handle longer/bigger, but the full-sized GRS was too much for me. The 18" AK, OTOH, works fine, and I can hardly wait to try out my BGRS.

welcome

depends what type chopping too;
firewood vs saplings vs ... ???

& style of chopping;
methodical vs lumberjack vs barbarian :D

when I got an M43
I was very impressed by the chop-fulness of it

Same response to Chitlangi model

But then every blade model varies in proportions & weight.

Handle a half-dozen of each model from a table display
& you'll likely find one of them that screams "take me home"
and one that leaves you completely cold.

18" oal & 28-32 oz is a good standard for a chopper
for average person to handle & carry

don't get perplexed by the details
once you get the list down to 2 or 3, or 4
pick the one that just appeals to you the most
for whatever reason

The 20" big boys can get very tiring in unusual ways. I'll be squeezing the handle so hard to maintain control (due to some substantial centrifugal forces at work) that I'll literally squeeze the blood out of my forearm. When I'm done chopping my fingers will be locked onto the handle in a death grip, forcing me to pry them off with the other hand. I'll shake my arm to get the blood flowing again and then the pins and needles start...not fun.

Of course, my large khuks were all made some time ago and they weigh a bit less these days, but if it's 20" or larger and 40 ounces or heavier it will get uncomfortable to swing after ten or fifteen minutes.

Or maybe I need to spend more time in the gym. :(

I use an 18.5" AK to chop chop chop non stop. I even chopped my couch, once or twice. I'll have to chopp it up for garbage man if I get a new couch fer Chrimmus. The AK is good for backpackin and campin', too. It's rad.

Thanks for the info. I wouldn't be doing any sort of ridiculous chopping, mostly just turning pre cut firewood logs into fist sized chunks of wood for my BBQ smoker. That and I just want a general purpose knife that's bigger than a Bowie-type hunting knife and smaller than a machete or bolo.

fist size chunks out of precut firewood

17"-19" 28-32oz will do fine there too

maybe plan to use a baton for splitting control

hate to see finger parts laying iin the woodpile

:D
