I am going to buy a new knife after the first of the year. It will be in the $100-150 price range. What knife brand do you think is best and which of that companies knives sould I buy ? Thanks for your help.

Overall, in the price range you listed, I would say a Socom Elite from Microtech.
Next in line would be a Benchmade 730, or maybe a Spyderco Wegner.

But best brand in that price range is Microtech or Masters Of Defense.
I'm of course talking used knife prices, as you would find in the for sale forum on this board, at least as far as MT or MOD is concerned.

JP, first of all welcome to the Forums.
Your question maybe just a little too general, can you narrow it down a bit? For example; what do you own now, what do you want the knife for, are you more tactical or tradional, fixed blade or folder, what size blade, etc?
The companies I think you can't go wrong with would be; Spyderco, CRKT, Outdoor Edge, Buck, Kershaw, Camillus, AG Russell and the list could go on and on.

Sorry about that. I meant a folding knife with a 3 or 4 inch blade. I own a BM 710, 720, CQC7, a Buck Crosslock, a CRKT small M-16, a Gerber Gator, a Spyderco delica and a few more. Can I get a SOCOM Elite from MT in that price range? I have been told by a lot of people that the MT knives are very good.

John,
need to look in to the Al Mar SERE 2000. This knife will run you about $120.00 from Patrick at www.tripleaughtdesign.com This is a WHOLE lot of folder for that price. Do a search on this forum and the Knife Reveiws forum and you will get a wealth of information. New Tatical Knives magazine has an article from Jeff Randall on this folder. Take a look, you'll be pleased.

John -

Check out extereme outfitters (www.tacticaledge.com) They have a new Emerson called the SOCFK that is basically a hybrid of three of Ernie's knives: Specwar body, CQC7 blade, and the Commander wave.

Donald at the VA branch of Extreme bent over backwards for me when I got mine. An excellent knife, and a decent price ($150)

Good luck!

microtech lcc,s are a great knife for 150.00 i don't care for any of that over sea,s stuff you get what you pay for if it cost 30.00 then it is worth 30.00

Honey !!! were the hell is my Knife ??????

redratsnake is right. You've got a nice little collection there already. It's time to step up to something better in terms of fit and finish, and the Microtech LCC is going for under $150. It is also different enough in style to be a real addition, instead of just a repetition of what you've already got.

Slim down some of your collection, add the $ you have budgeted and get a Sebenza. You will not be sorry.

(please excuse any typing mistakes - I'm all bandaged up - that knife was sharp <g>)

You've asked a very OPEN ended question, to the point that it's almost like asking, which is better, a Ferrarri or a Peterbuilt?

It depends on what you want to do with the knife, or what kind of knife you want!

Do you want a fixed blade knife? Then you can buy a lot of differnt knives, up to and including small customs

You want a folder? Tactical? Utility? Gents? Small? Large?

Depending on how you answer these, you get different answer "sets" (you don't get one answer)

I'm a little biased, but I really like my REKATS! I just love the way my Carnivore sits in my hand. The Rolling Lock is stronger than I'll ever need, and if you keep your eyes on the "For Sale " forum you might find one of the red Bladeforums models.

This topic is open to alot of debate. I would have to say that if you see a knife that you like and it is in your price range and suits your needs, then I guess you found the best.

John - so much depends on what you're going to use it for, the size you want, etc. Here's my .25 worth. I'm kind of a newbie, and I use fillet knives more than anything. I'm not a collector. I'm not an expert, I can only speak from limited, subjective, personal experience. I use 'em for everything a knife is intended, and to me, esthetics = function. I find beauty in brutal functionality. Here's another observation. The competition is such that, provided you're sticking to name brand stuff, I think it's hard to find a "bad" knife. In fact, what makes buying difficult is the host of really good knives in an enormous price range, from shockingly inexpensive to pretty hefty. I did an exhaustive, almost anal retentive search and my first folder purchase was a Spyderco Wegner jr. It was the right balance of price, function, size, and quality. I've carried it for about a year and a half. It still works perfectly and appears that it will outlast me. In my opinion, based on everything I've read here, for the money Spyderco is probably one of the best products available. They certainly have a horde of loyal followers. As an example, you can get 440V steel in a Native for around $100. I've handled most but I've not owned modern folders such as Gerber, CS, BM, Buck, etal so I can't speak about them from personal experience, but as I understand it, they all make really good stuff. Recently I purchased a Micro Tech SOCOM Elite from Tiple Aught. It weighs 4.5 oz, has a 4" blade, is in CM154 steel, stone wash finish, and I would consider it among the best "production" folders you can buy. The fit an finish is just about perfect. It cuts like crazy, feels right in the hand, and has a life time warranty. It cost me about $165 and is worth every penny. If you want arguably one of the best, take a long hard look at MT. It's in your price range and it's pretty incredible tool. Good luck.

jackG - 440V native is less than 50$

John - buy an Al Mar SERE 2000. You will absolutely not have any regrets. (search for it in the testing forum)
Also, Microtech and Chris Reeve Knives are the best production companies, end of story.
