I wanted to see what alot of you think were the best companies back then, but are still doing the same quality work today?

Based on the knives I own and have owned I feel that Buck Knives has been building a quality product since the first day they opened for business. They're not perfect and not every design they've put forward has been a winner but overall I believe they've tried to do the right thing, for the right reason, every time.

Interesting question! Define "back then," if you would. Spyderco "back then", or Marbles "back then."

Opinel knives have been made since 1890. It could be that there have been periods in which Opinel quality suffered or was inconsistent, but not in my lifetime.

Victorinox.

How about a company who's product quality has improved dramatically? Okapi. Compare the original knives made in Germany for export to Aftrica, to the modern knives actually made in South Africa. I have some originals supposedly from the 1950s and they are absolute junk, whereas the new ones are very inexpensive but useable tools.

I'd be curious to compare some of the Scandinavian companies' knives, modern to vintage. Helle (1932), Marttiini (1923), Mora, etc.

HA! Good point.

If you're concerned about whether a knife you're considering will hold up over time, lightskyam, one good indicator is the manufacturer's warranty. Stick with reputable companies that provide limited lifetime warranties that adhere to their knives rather than to the original purchasers and you'll be good to go.

well i guess "back then" will be different for everyone based on your age. lets say back then means as far back as you can remember your first knife and the rest in between, comparing those models to today's quality.

Victorinox haven't changed much and for good reason.

my father recently bought a very nice set of victorinox steak knives. i must say they are great and i've had no problems eating my steak with those knives, even the steak that's been cooked like shoe leather. :D

I agree with Victorinox. Spyderco, IMO has improved on a already quality product.

I know BenchMade is a young company (1988) but for what it's worth, as I am only 30, their production was spot on "back then" and still spot on to this day. In the custom realm I hold Daniel Winkler in High regards as he's been at it since 77' and still putting out great functional and tough as nails knives to include his forged knives and stock removal production knives.
