I have a friend who wants a really rugged knife and basicaly he desided on these for knives.

Cold Steel SRK
Ontario spec plus quartermaster
Ka-Bar long heavy bowie
Ka-Bar warthog fixed blade combat

these are just the knives he like the most so please tell me which you like the most and why. also feel free to sugest any different knives you think would work the best. the most important thing is that the knife can take some real punishment.

P.S. he also has a thing that he pufers pull tang.

well, usually these threads end up shooting for the moon, so I'll toss out the basic questions-What's his price range? What's his intended use?

Looks like he wants a carbon steel blade, black coated, with a synthetic handle. He can look at Beckers and Ontario TAKs, Rangers for a bit more, Busses and Swamp Rat for more still.

Don't worry, you'll get lots of suggestions :)

For the money, the SRK is tough to beat. Lots of knives in this size range that are outstanding as well.

Ontario TAK
Cold Steel Master Hunter
Buck 119
Buck Nighthawk
SOG NW Ranger

Lots out there...Good luck with the search...Jim

Of the knives you list the Cold Steel is probably the best, quality wise. Cold Steel may be run by a maniac but they do sell a good product, especially fixed blades (you have to be more careful about their folders).
For other knives I suggest the BenchMade 156CSK - http://newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=5728
It’s made of D-2, which will hold an edge much longer than most knives. However, if you ding it up getting dents and chips out of the blade will be an absolute pain in the neck. For really rough use the SRK might be better.
Also take a look at the Becker line- http://newgraham.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=62
Made by the same people as the SRK(until Camillus closes) and an excellent product for the price.

I have a Kabar long heavy bowie which I like a lot but haven't used all that much yet. Most of the comments on them here have been good.

The best heavy use knife I have is one of the least expensive of my big knives. The Ka-Bar Cutlass. It's like a mini bolo machete with a thicker blade. Small enough to be handy, I can carry it while riding a motorcycle on trail maintenance and never notice it until I need to cut something. When I do need to cut something it usually only takes one swing. I'm not an overly big or strong guy but I've cut through a 4" (green) branch in one swing with it. I'm 100% certain you could chop off a dude's arm pretty easily if you had to. I've used it so much I've worn almost all of the black off of the blade. I've sharpened it once, lightly, and the thing is still sharp enough to cut anything I put it up against. I've been trying to wreck the thing for a couple years (with honest use, not anything over the top like hitting it with a sledge hammer or pulling on it with a tractor whilst wedged between two trees) and it's still in great shape. The only damage is to grommet in the lanyard hole, which got squished on a bad throw and the handle hit a tree hard. Oh yeah, it throws great too, if you're into such childishness. (which I am) It's the best of my heavy use knives because it was so cheap I'm not afraid to do anything with it. I think I paid $40 for it- best $40 I ever spent. I'm sure that my other knives could do the same things, but they're just too pretty, and too expensive to abuse.

The Cold Steel SRK is a really nice knife but a little puny for doing real work with. If you're outdoors and nobody's around to give you any crap, bigger is better. There's something about swinging a big knife and doing serious work with it that makes you feel like a man. Mucho macho!
