Speaking for myself, my time with blades has been characterized by trial and error along with losing cash on some knives that I figured in hindsight I didn't really need. Looking back on your knife using/collecting which do you wish you had bought first? The reason I ask this is because had I bought what is growing on me to become my fav blade, I may have been able to avoid buying scores of other knives.

What I'm about to say may be perceived as blasphemy amongst some of you but the knife I wish I had bought first would have to be my CRKT M16-04Z. Considering I also prefer Jack Daniels to other alcohol, I suppose I'm cursed to have cheap tastes but IMHO had I bought this knife all those years ago I probably would not have bought a few of my BM's, Spyderco C07, or legions of cheaper folders.

Granted I still think BM and Spyderco make amazing products, but for who I am and what I would use a blade for, the M16 delivers for a really decent price. Some people don't like Aus-6, but I've got a wet stone and spare time so it doesn't phase me too much and I find that the retention isn't too bad either. On top of that, I find that the four point clip-option and sturdy feel of the knife definatley makes it versatile enough to work in the yard as well as ride as my EDC.

Ultimatley, I don't regret buying any of my higher end knives. They are excellent tools that have always delivered on what I bought them for. But I can't help but think had I met this M16 a long time ago, I may have been able to have had a manogamous relationship with it  .

For most production knives (not Limited Edition) pretty much does not have re-sell value. They are really made for working purpose i feel. Just look at the great almighty Manix, second hand only worth 80-90 dollars top. Recently I really feel the need to stop collect any production knife. Collecting them it's really for personal pleasure, not much of investment.
Unless you collect the whole manifature line, with every model, every color that ever came out. Kind of impossible, but that is some collection.

Going back from orgin, I will only buy one mini skirmish or a Manix. And save rest of money on rare customs.

I am actually glad my first knife purchase was a cheap POS, and for all the "learning experiences" that followed as well- you have to have experience with crappy knives in order to really appreciate quality.

Yep. Plenty of cheap sharpening lessons, plenty of examples of what isn't a strong lock, etc. I've had several crappy cheap knives in the past, but I don't consider them a "waste". Especially since even though they were numerous, they probably didn't add up to $50.

Since I discovered "real" knives ("real" meaning anything better than a $30 linerlock kershaw), my first auto was a Woodard Fer De Lance, my first balisong was a BM42MC, and the cheapest knives I own are Spydercos. Not a bad jump from $5 flea market knockoffs, I'd say.

If my first knife would have been a Sebenza, then I don't know if I would have collected as much, and that is not fun!

i wish i had learned my steels etc. first it would have saved me some money and alot of frustration.
