He recently bagged his first deer. Found his knife too big and and not as useful as he thought.

For Christmas I was thinking Iwould gift him wiht a good Buck. Which one tho?

I am thinking either a 103, 102, 105 113 or Vanguard?

What is the consensus of the best deer hunting knife that will allow him to do the nicks and crannies?

118 hands down. Perhaps the D2 version that’s out there.

Second would be a 110, which you could get inscribed to commemorate his first harvest.

That’s for field dressing and even skinning and quartering though. For boning, you want a good fillet knife with a 5” or so blade. As much as I love my Bucks for hunting, my butchering is done with Victorinox butcher knives.

536 or 679 something like that with gut hook?

edit part. realized i read "too big" the wrong way. was thinking long only not thickness or width of the blade and particular tasks rather than a general deer cleaning knife.

yeah small and thin blade 118. love mine for certain tasks where it need to be smaller to do the work effectively.

I've used the 118 for years, it has served me well. I also like the Vanguard, have the Cabela's Alaskan Guide 692 for hunting duties...carried both this year but was not successful. Preston

Another voice added for the Buck 118 suggestion; not sure how many deer I have cleaned and butchered with a 118, but it is my "go to" big game knife (and I have lots of knives!) OH

I really like the 117 with the phenolic or wood handle. It is the perfect size.

I don't know what he had with him. I wasn't there. I hope it was not the 14 inch Kershaw Camping knife I gave him last year to clear area with as a small machete tool. :) He said the older guys had a smaller knife they were able to get around better.

I ordered a 118 Personal Skinner for him today. Based on what I saw here, it should be just what he is talking about.

You can’t go wrong with that!

My first “deer knife” purchase was a 619. I’ve hade it forever, and it’s only touched one deer. I was pretty green then and didn’t know better.
Can you clean a deer with it? Yep!
Will the deer look like you killed it with a lawnmower? That’s the potential...lol

I actually prefer the 102, the 101 (a fixed blade 110 by Copperandclad), or the 113 are all about the right size. Most knives to too long and/or too big.
