My brothers are headed back for their third tour next month. Was going to get them some Beckers, but not sure which ones. Leaning towards the BK2 cause I love it so much, unless someone can give me a really compelling reason for one of the other models.

One is recon, the other is advance infantry.

Suggestions?

BK7. All the way. The 2 is great, but a 7 was designed to be the Combat/Utility Becker, and it works well. Truste by soldiers in all 5 branches of the service. Damn fine knife, get them some better sheaths though, something molle capable.

The BK2 would be a excellent gift, the BK7 would also be excellent.

I'm sure they would be happy with either....

alright im going against the grain here, but have you thought about a regular kabar usmc utility knife? time proven and fairly light in hand, can handle most tasks you put it up against( maybe not to much prying) and be light enough not to be a pain if you make a long haul in the mountains.

I'm with Moose. Get them the BK7. I would have loved one of those when I was in the military.

Oh, I meant to add. I they have expressed a desire for a good fixed blade then go with my suggestion. If they have not, get them the 14 or the 2 in that order. And then, hopefully, the respect and appreciation of good blades with grow. If you get a non knife guy a 7, it will most likely end up just laying around. I've seen this happen on deployments, and tons of guys in the infantry community are not knife guys, a surprising amount really

yeah, get a 7... get a spec-ops sheath for it (or one of the 1/2 price hunter models, the brown is subdued and the camo is okay)... a lot of those guys just spray paint them whatever colors they need anyway.

provide an allen wrench just in case, micarta upscale if you really want...

provide a pocket stone too to store in the sheath.

for a bonus, include a BK13 for grins and giggles for the built-in mini-sheath.

include a bike tire or two (ranger bands)

toss in 100M of 550/paracord... plus any other odd kit they want like.

bonus!

bk14 because it weighs nothing and takes up no space or bk7 w/micarta scales

Hmm, what does your brother do? Weight can be a real issue. I'm no badass but the few I know travel lighter than I would have expected.

When my brother was in the Corps(2004 - 2009) . I got him a tac tool.BK3
I don't think he used it much deployed, He told me he used it all the time in training.

This is one of those times I really wish the Tweeners were available so I could suggest one of those.

I have had friends who were deployed told they could not take larger knives, in one case a BK-7 specifically, because they were "too big".

Personally I'd like the BK-2 because I like over-built tools. But then again I don't have to hump 80 pounds of gear across Afghanistan either.

Of the available Becker knives I guess I would suggest the Ritter RSK MK2, the collaboration between Ethan and Doug, because it is similar in size to the BK2 but thinner and so therefore a bit lighter.

perhaps a BK7 and custom cut it down?

Since they have already been in country before, I would ask them what their needs are. Everyones MOS will entail different needs and wants. Most of what we did would have been handled well by a BK14 or BK2. I had a Strider DB Tanto that I used most of the time with a blade length of just under 4 inches. I would have not needed a longer blade, however their service may require a longer blade length.

Hey Derek....

When I sent an assortment over to a unit the overwhelming favorite was the Necker.....So that or an Eskabar.....The military buys a fair number of BK2s....If their units allow the larger knives.....I think I would go with the BK7 if I liked larger blades.......SOOOO---11 or 14 and a 2 or 7......

Zip tie the little guy to the vest.......It will do 90 percent of what needs be done.....

May they be safe and return happy....

Please give them my heartfelt thanks........

All Best...

If they're going to be fighting w/ knives, then the 7 or the 9. Otherwise, I'd want a BK-11 or 14.

In other words - the 11 or 14.

I'm not biased or anything (hehehe), but my vote is a solid BK7!! I think the 7 is slightly more combat oriented than the 2. And for a smaller back up blade, the BK14 is at the top of my list!!

Wish your Brother's the best! Will keep them (and all our boy and girls) in my prayers!!
