I just won a 1084/15N20 damascus blank over on ShopTalk. It's 3/16"x1 5/16x6". Which slipjoint pattern do you think would be most appropriate for this steel? I was thinking about getting the blank surface ground down to around 7/64" and making a Lanny's clip. Any other ideas?

Tribal spear has all the right lines for Damascus IMHO.

What is the pattern of the Damascus though? If it was a ladder pattern then Lanny's Clip all the way.

I think you are right. The lines of the feather damascus should work well with the shape of the clip blade of the lanny's clip.

A creamy bark mammoth ivory for the covers would compliment the damascus well too IMHO.

Looking forward to seeing what you make of it.

If it were my choice, I'd go with a small fixed blade. Probably something in a bird and trout pattern.

Good luck in your project.

I agree with Bob, that steel seems more suited towards a fixed blade. I think that blank could make a very nice puukko, maybe even 2 if you make the blade width small enough

I think it would be a nice fixed blade as well. I've a nice pattern drawn already as a "church blade" with plans for wrought iron bolsters and elephant ivory covers. My daughter is on her way outside to grab it now.

Dang. I will have to draw a similar knife slightly less long. It works height-wise, but it's 7" long.

You could do an even longer knife if you made the pattern with a partial tang. ;)
That wouldn't necessarily be my choice, but it's certainly an option.

You can always make a hidden tang by using this method. If you don't have the parts or tools to make them K&G sells a little kit with everything you need included.
