So I was thinking about adding another knife to my list. So far I have the BM Mini-Grip D2 and Ka-Bar Dozier.

I had the mini-grip d2 first and got my dozier after. At first when I was researching I didn't think much of the Dozier being it's a cheaper knife with inferior quality steel and a simple traditional locking mechanism. After I bought it and got to use it for a little while I was impressed with the little guy. That damn Dozier feels much better in my hand in terms of grip and balance. It's sharpens to razor sharp easily and holds an edge for a fair amount of use. The opening/locking mechanism is just solid and I can even do one handed opening/closing now. It even sits better in my pocket being thinner and lighter. For all of that it's only 1/3 of the price of my mini-grip. :o

The dozier's presents made me dislike the mini-grip d2.

I don't mind spending the money if it really is more valueable. This isn't the case with the mini-grip though. Not for me at least. Sometimes simplicity + functionality wins over technological innovations and it is very true in this case.

So I am out searching for another folder with 3" blade or smaller. With my criteria listed above, what can you recommand?

It is not under 3" but folder that impressed me most was Benchmade Gravitator - it has differently colored and textured G10 slabs, titanium liners, 154CM steel, pyramid shaped thubmstuds and it just looks gorgeous (respect to Mike Snody (designer)). And all that for $100. IMHO absolutely best value currently available.

(Also Spyderco CF BG42 Military ($155) is pretty impressive (today you don't see much carbon fiber, not under $200).

Spyderco Calypso Jr. impressed the heck out of me. More expensive than the Ka-Bar Dozier (which a have and this is a great deal) but a lot less than the other (which I don't have).

Hmm....Benchmade Morpho has seriously impressed me (when the QC on that stupd latch gets under control).

As per the dozier, just wait till you try a thorn.

The knife that impressed me the most of any knife I've e er owned was the Benchmade 710 D2.

It is an incredible knife for the price.

I don't have a Dozier yer, but I intend to remedy that as soon as I can decide which one I want first. In all likelihood, it will be the "Wilderness.":D

The one that impressed me the most was the Byrd Cara Cara G 10. That knife is built like knives costing $100.

the first 'expensive' knife i bought, a benchmade pardue auto. bought about 8 years ago for 150. maybe a bit pricey for your taste, but bm makes many models for less $$ and they are all top quality knives.

I'll second that. My G10 Cara Cara impressed me more than any of my other hundreds of knives. I was totally blown away with how nice it was when it arrived. It came in the same package as my Buck Strider 880, which I paid 5 times more for, and was very disappointed by.

I really enjoy Spydercos and it was the Para-Military that did it for me as far as EDC is concerned. I recently purchased a Caly 3 and now that is the ultimate EDC that has impressed me the most.

Ditto for knives that I own. It is just a great piece, and I gave a couple away to family as gifts recently. My new one has no blade play at all (the other 2 only had a hint vertical play), and the construction is extremely solid. The steel is easy to sharpen and holds an edge better than AUS 8. Hard to beat for a $22 knife. Now we need to convince Sal to make a full flat grind version.
Of the passaround knives the Manix and Rukus impressed me most. I used the Manix for some really tough chores, and it worked great. It cut like hell and is a true tank. The only real drawback to me was that it was pretty wide in the pocket. The Rukus had great fit and finish and cut very well, but since it was part of a lotto I didn't beat on it like I did the Manix. It seemed extremely tough, and though very large carried a little better than the Manix in the pocket. Overall I think I want to get the Manix, since it is cheaper, and I will be more apt to use it like it was designed. The Rukus was just too pretty I think to feel good about beating on it, and I prefer a Spyderhole for opening over a thumb stud.

I used to have an Al Mar SERE 2000 that I really liked, but it was too big for me. I prefer the smaller knives. Now that the Mini SERE came out, I am definitely going to get one.

Another nice small knife is the BM 707, but it is probably too close to being like your Mini Grip. Griptillians are a great bang for the buck knife!

zimmerDN,I also have a Mini Grip and Ka-Bar Dozier. The Dozier is my edc almost all the time for the same reasons you gave.Dont get me wrong I love the axis lock just not in that knife. For the price of a Mini Grip I could of bought three Doziers.SGT
